help backing up disk image

Thread needs solution

having issues backup disk image  to external hard drive, I boot the laptop from usb drive

source: selected disk1 all partitions 

destination: externl drive with enough space

Your second screen image above indicates why the backup is failing, i.e. there are bad sectors or other disk issues present on one or more of the disk partition which are causing ATI to switch to using Sector-by-Sector mode of operation.

The key downside of using Sector-by-Sector is that it will potentially create a backup of the same size as your full source disk drive (475.7 GB shown in your image) and thus your external backup drive needs to have more free space than this value.

When you see this error message, cancel the backup task (click on No), then click on Logs (shown in your first image), where the log data should give some more information.

To resolve these errors, you can run CHKDSK /F to see what this shows, CHKDSK /R can be used to locate and try to recover bad sectors but will run for some time depending on the size of the disk.

Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:
