Help understanding some of the technical words

Thread needs solution

I am having problems comprehending the following text due to my lack of knowledge of the technical vocabulary.

Glossary:

the metadata file
the original backup task
the ATI GUI
there is no matching task in the GUI
the backup task settings
the automatic clean-up rules

Here is the context:

I have just learned in a support call that even full backups files (tibx) are not independent from their respective backup chain.

This means, that even if they had been validated successfully, any backup-file copy at some other location can't be used anymore after the original file got removed by eg the ATI 2020 cleanup.

RESPONSE

I am not sure that the above statements are correct!
The key to all new backup files using .tibx file format in ATI 2020 is to try to keep files together, but most importantly to keep the metadata file with any files that may be copied to another location.

If the original backup task that created these files is still shown in the ATI GUI, then you should not attempt to add the files created by that task from a different destination location unless you have first removed the backup task settings from the GUI.

If there is no matching task in the GUI, then you can use the option to 'Add existing backup' for files stored in another location, just the same as you could for files created using the Acronis Rescue Media offline from Windows.
The following screen images were captured for making a series of full backup images to my external backup drive and show how the very first file of the backup sequence becomes the metadata file when the automatic clean-up rules start cleaning up the oldest backup files.

Thank you.

Roberto.

Roberto, I will try to give a simple explanation for the terms listed:

  • the metadata file
Metadata is used by ATI 2020 for the new .tibx backup files, and as backup chains are created, the first file of the chain becomes dedicated to holding metadata in a 12Kb size file.

  • the original backup task
This is the task that was used to create backup files being discussed in the context of your support call, so the task that create the chain of either full or differential files.

  • the ATI GUI
This is simply the main ATI application panel shown in Windows: GUI = Graphic User Interface.

  • there is no matching task in the GUI
This means that you have some backup files (.tibx or .tib) with names that do not match any backup task shown in the main ATI application panel.  File names are created based on the backup task name used in the panel.

  • the backup task settings
These are the settings configured for any backup task in the ATI GUI, so these include the data chosen for the backup Source, the backup Destination, and then the further Options defined by clicking on the Options button.
Schedule / Backup scheme / Notifications / Exclusions and Advanced options.

  • the automatic clean-up rules
These are shown on the Options > Backup scheme configuration page and show when an appropriate backup scheme is chosen, enabling the files for that scheme to be managed automatically by ATI.
Example: Incremental backup scheme which creates a new Full backup after making 5 incremental files thus creating a chain of 6 files (Full + 5 Incr files).
Enabling automatic clean up shows further options such as to 'Store no more than 2 recent version chains', which then allows ATI to delete the oldest files when a 3rd Full backup file is created successfully, so keeping only 2 backup chains.
