How to determine if Acronis is still working
My backup has been stuck at 2h 33m remaining for the past three hours. How do I determine if it is still doing something? It would be nice if Acronis outputs the name of each file as it is backed up. It would be a great indicator informing the user what is happening. Also allow this option to be turned off if scrolling names becomes a nuisance.

When it looks like an application is stuck, I will open Task Manager to see what it is doing. You can check its CPU load, memory, disk activity. I also will sort on CPU to see where it is relative to other tasks.

My Hardware/Software configuration
Dell XPS 8920
C: drive is Intel Optane. 1 TB
F: drive is Seagate ST31000340NS, SATA HDD 1 TB
USB external drive, Western Digital MyBook. 4TB, Formatted exFat (used for Acronis backups)
Windows 10 Home, 64-bit
I am backing up my C: and F: drives in "Drives and Partions" mode. Total size is about 350 BG and free space is 2.8 out of 4TB.
Resolved: This issue doesn't really exist anymore. I deleted the most recent backup and all its increments and ran Acronis again. This time Acronis claimed a file, ec105.evi, could not be backed up and halted. Said the problem was the file may be busy and I could ignore or cancel. I chose the ignore and backup went to completion. I cannot determine what is wrong with that file; it is one of dozens similarly named in that same folder.
New Issue: However, with the USB drive plugged in and no backups running, there is a repetitive disk I/O every two seconds and my mouse locks up for several seconds then resumes for another few seconds then locks again. The only way to work is with the USB drive unplugged.
To check that I can recover any backup files, I plugged the USB back in and clicked the Recovery button. Now something is squirrelly: Acronis says it could not find this latest backup even though the window was still showing the successful backup message. It said to either browse for that backup and add it or delete it. This is all very confusing.
Why do I have to add it?
What is the object that it is being added to? Since this backup is the "full" level, are the incremental levels going to be attached to this correct full level?
I chose to Add and after a very long time the Recovery window finally displayed the selected backup file.
I am most confused by what is displayed in the left panel under "This Computer". What is the purpose of this panel? It seems to show the generic name applied to backup files but without the extensions of level nomenclature. There are multiple full backups on the drive. How do I find the other ones in case I want to go back further in time?

Nicholas,
Please read Section 5.1.2 starting on page 95 of the User Guide linked to below. It should answer most of your questions.

Nicholas, thanks for the further information.
I would recommend breaking your backup to limit each one to a single source disk drive rather than including both your drives in a single backup. This will help make the backups work faster by being smaller plus help in the event of any future recovery. Doing this will also help you to identify and isolate any issues during the backup process, so not stopping the backup for the other drive when there is an issue on the first drive etc.
When specific files are triggering an issue with the backup task, then check that the owning application that created those files is not active and locking them, or that they are not being 'held' by any security applications such as antivirus putting files in quarantine as potential malware.
With regards to the disk activity for your USB drive, you would need to try to identify what application is performing this activity and why that is happening, as this could also indicate some form of scanning either by malware, indexing or security software.
There have been intermittent issues with the Recovery page in ATI 2020 saying that there was no data to restore which have been fixed by simply adding back the backup file again using the option to 'Add existing backup'. I have had this just once to date.
