I have to upgrade to 2021 to finally have a functional .tibx format?

Thread solved

Hello everyone!

Been an Acronis TI user for about ten years now, but a bit confused about the current trend.

Made the choice to upgrade from 2018 to 2020, whereas, retrospectively, 2019 would have been a way better fit. Saw the changes about the new tibx format and its limitations, but also that old backups stay tib and that there's a mildly hacky way to create new backups with as tib still, so ignored that.
I just picked up the topic again today, only to find that to finally be able to mount and virtualize tibx files, I have to upgrade again, to 2021, for 70€?

What kind of policy is it to ship a functionality-wise worse format as standard, with no intended way of retaining use of the old format in the UI, and then charge again to finally fix those deficiencies - or am I severely misunderstanding something here?

Had I not paid attention and started to use tibx only to find out about its limitations at a later point, I would now be forced to upgrade to use features I've had for years?

I could somehow justify shipping an incomplete format as a kind of public beta test if the improvements were made available to 2020 as well, but as it seems I would have to upgrade to 2021 with all its additional bloatware, which I don't need from backup software. This trend of trying to create a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type of program by Acronis repulses me, but if they want to go for it and/or a large portion of the userbase likes it, why not, as long as I can turn that stuff off. However, not delivering on a previous release and necessitating to pay for all that stuff only to get features back that one had for years - that's a different story to me.

The only reason I stayed with Acronis is that it performed slightly better compared to Macrium in my short tests, has a UI for file exclusions, and mainly that I had no problems when I had to restore - yet, as it seems, after reading through some stories here and on other forums.
I read some posts here who's ops were driven away by the developments of Acronis as well and asked for reasons to stay - I don't want to do that and neither want to tread on somebodies toes who likes the current trend; I don't feel like I have the voice power to dictate any form of direction.
I'm simply bewildered by the thought that another upgrade is necessary to regain features and was hoping that I'm misunderstanding something, but in the case that I'm not, TI is probably not the software for me anymore.

James, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry to read of your disappointment with the direction that Acronis have chosen to take with both ATI 2020 and 2021 with regards to migration to using .TIBX format files, and the limitations imposed on these, especially with ATI 2020.

As you have noted, there are many other users who are equally disappointed and who had expected Acronis to resolve the limitations in a new build for 2020 rather than users being forced to upgrade (at cost) to the 2021 version.

I would recommend submitting Feedback direct to Acronis using the tool provided in the GUI Help section to register your feelings and your intention to look at alternative solutions for your Backup & Recovery needs.

Note: there was a Holiday discount offered by Acronis for users to upgrade to 2021 but this expired yesterday Jan 13th, plus the largest discount was only for the Advanced / Premium subscription versions which then need to be renewed year on year!

See forum topic: How to create a Disk backup as .tib (not .tibx) which will create a new backup task using the older .tib format in the Windows ATI 2020 or 2021 GUI that is still working and will give you the options to Mount or convert to VHD for new Disk backups.

Hello Steve!

Thank you for taking the time to answer me, I've read a lot of your comments while skimming the forum before!

Sounds reasonable, I'll definetely submit feedback to Acronis directly as well. The more feedback they get, the better they can assess the sentiment of the community and choose a direction that fits the majority, be that akin to my preferences or not.

Ah, I maybe've missed the larger discounts or they were not available in the German store. I only looked at the non-subscription options though.

James, glad to be able to respond here!

Personally, if you can live with ATI 2020 and use the work-around for forcing use of .TIB files for when needed, then I would say to forget about 2021 in its current implementation!

All the extra focus by Acronis in turning 2021 into a new Cyber Protection solution and losing focus on the core Backup, Recovery & Clone features is costing them a lot of existing users who find the new features both unwanted and impacting performance etc.

Currently the new protection features in 2021 remain active in the background regardless of the user electing to 'Turn off protection permanently!' (unless the user hacks the application!).

Access to the options to Mount .TIBX backups or convert to .VHD(x) is simply not worth upgrading to 2021 for!

Completely agree with you there, upgrading only to virtualize/mount tibx is not worth it! Since all my backups are also running on tib still, I don't have the need for it in any case.

Really glad you told me about the un-deactivatable (at least not simply) protection features of 2021, that's a knock-out criterion for me!
I read something similar while skimming some other topics but simply guessed that they were talking about it -not- being turned off instead of that it -can't- be turned off, but now their words make more sense!
