Image created with bootable usb stick not visible on the hard disk

Thread solved

I created an image with a bootable usb stick with Acronis True Image 2020 on an external usb hard drive, formated with NTFS. After completion I started the PC and searched for the image, but I didn't find it. However, the free disk space was 8GB less. After them I called up the properties of the drive and search for errors. The troubleshooting found errors and asked me, if they should be repaired. I clicked Yes. Then came the message that the error can not be repaired. But I can repair the drive the next time I restart it. I clicked yes and restarted the PC. Now I can see a file with the extension .tibx but it has 0 bytes. What is causing this problem? The hard drive is fine and works well. regards Michael

Michael, welcome to these public User Forums.

From the limited information you have given, I suspect that when you created the image from your USB media that you system was actually in a hybrid sleep state akin to hibernation, and therefore the changes to the file system for the backup file were not preserved when the system resumed from that state.

This has been seen for other users since the advent of Windows Fast Start which uses this hybrid sleep state to improve start up time.

If you want to boot from the USB media, then do a full system shutdown by first pressing & holding down a Shift key while clicking on Shutdown, or else turn of Windows Fast Start temporarily.

Hello Steve,

thank you for your answer.
I made a new backup and followed your instructions and now it works fine. I would never have figured out what is causing this problem.
