initialisation of new hard drive

Thread solved

Hi,

I have just bought a new 4 TB hard drive and put it in an external usb 3 cady that I have used for years. I set about initializing as a gpt disk and creating a new partition. When I next looked the initialization had failed. I decided to try again, but the drive was not visible, so I couldn't do it. Is the drive faulty?

It is possible that the drive has failed. Another possibility is that there is a problem with the USB 3 caddy. Have you previously used it with 4TB HDD? If not it is possible that it does not support drives of that size (I have an early USB 3 docking station and it does not support drives greater than 2TB). Alternatively, the caddy may have failed. I assume that you checked connections and cables. The USB port on the computer may have failed (easily tested), or if it is on the front or side of the computer the internal cable may have come loose from the header).

Turns out to be the caddy. I had it plugged in on the front of my pc. Now plugged into usb 3 socket on the back of the pc and ok.

Excellent. Glad that you are not up and running.
