Is it safe to move .tibx backups through Windows

Thread solved

Since ATI 2020 will not allow moving backups, is it safe to move backups using Windows Explorer? Kind regards, Michael

I have had issues with moved backups not recognizing my password. Therefore I was unable to open the backup.

Thanks, Technogod.  That's good to know.

Kind regards,

Michael

Michael, the answer as is often the case with these type of questions is 'it depends!'.

What exactly are you wanting to move and why?

The big issue with .tibx backups is the interdependency that they have on all the other files created for the same backup task, so individual files cannot be moved unless you move every file for that same task.

If you are wanting to change the destination for a task and move existing files to the new destination, then you should be using the Move option for this.  The other issue currently is that Move is not available for .tibx tasks in the current build version, only for Files & Folders tasks.

Hi Steve,

I just want to move a full .tibx backup from an internal drive to an external drive.  I am hoping I can move the backup via Windows Explorer since it can't be moved within ATI 2020.

BTW, do you know if these basic features like move, naming and renaming, etc., will be implemented in ATI2020?  Missing these features (from earlier versions) is a big disappointment and makes me regret buying v. 2020.

Kind regards,

Michael

Michael, do you actually mean move the full .tibx file or do you mean copy?  There are significant differences that come into play between the two operations.

If you move any ATI file using Explorer, i.e. remove it from the original location set as the destination for your backup task, then ATI will complain about missing files!

If you copy the file, subject to my earlier comments about .tibx files and dependencies, then this won't affect the backup task(s) that created the copied files.

If you have Acronis Active Protection enabled, then this will object to either operation so should be turned off first before copying or moving files.

We all hope that Acronis will bring back the missing features that ATI 2020 lost for .tibx tasks but have no idea as to when that may happen!

See forum topic: Full Backups no independent entity - where there is a zipped powershell script here in that topic which moves full backup files to another location to help keep them completely independent of each other.

Thanks for the info., Steve.  I appreciate all your help.

Kind regards,

Michael
