Locate the volume with number '1'

Thread solved

I had a very old computer (Windows XP), which stopped working.  I sent it for repair because there were some files I wanted to retrieve.  Unfortunately, the computer was lost in transit.

I have some old tib files, as a backup for this old computer.  The backup was done across 5 DVDs, the first one was the boot disk and the others contained the data and the rest are 4 tib files.

I just want to access the files, obviously the system is too old and I have no interest in restoring it.  However, when I try to open the tib file within windows explorer, I get the message asking me to locate the volume with number 1.  If I try to validate a tib file, I get the message: 'Cannot find 1. You may have moved it or deleted it. Please click Browse and specify its location, or ignore this message.'  It says that 'due to an internal error I can only recover files from the backup', which would be perfect, but it doesn't allow me, the files are not listed and it only recovers an empty folder.

I guess that I have probably lost all the files for good, but I just thought I would have a last try and write to this forum to see if anyone can shed some advice.  I couldn't find any thread with this specific problem.  Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you

Ramon, welcome to these public User Forums.

I would suggest that the best way forward is to copy the contents of each DVD into a single folder on one of your local disk drives so that all the .tib files in a single place, then retry opening them or doing a validation etc.

Dear Steve,

Thank you very much for your message.  I have already done this, but it hasn't worked.  Obviously, I cannot copy the content of the first DVD, because it is the bootable media but I have copied all the rest in one folder.  However, I can neither open nor validate them.  I get the message that I need to locate volume 1.  I am enclosing an image of the message I receive and the prompt to open volume 1.

Any further guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Ramon, is there a .tib file on the first DVD of the set?

Are all the files showing their correct file extension as .tib after being copied from DVD?

To set the context for my question here: the Acronis rescue media / boot media only requires less than 1GB space but a DVD can hold up to 5GB of data, so plenty of free space to store a first .tib file on the same DVD.  Note: I have not used DVD's for storing backups since the days of using Ghost on old XP or earlier Windows versions!  Plus have always kept rescue media on separate CD's in those older days.

Hi Steve,

The first DVD cannot be read in Windows explorer.  I suppose this is because it is the bootable disk, isn't it?  All the others have the right tib extension file and are recognised as such by showing the correct Acronis icon.

Would it be possible to recreate the whole C drive on an external drive and then access the files?

Thank you very much for your time.  It is much appreciated.

Ramon

I am surprised that you cannot read the content of the DVD in Explorer as you should be able to do so even if it just shows a small number of Linux files used by the rescue media.

Do you know what version of ATI might have been used to create these DVD backup discs?

Thank you Steve, I gather that the DVD is damaged or corrupted then.  I suppose that I cannot do anything with the rest of tib files without volume 1, can I?  The ATI version was the one from around 2006 probably.  A long time ago!

Ramon, the oldest version of ATI that I have available is TI 9.0 which is probably from around the 2006 period.

I have a VMware VM with Windows 2000 with TI 9.0 installed and have tested creating a Disk backup to DVD from that system and the whole backup, including boot media fitted on a single DVD.

I am able to look at the DVD contents on my Windows 10 laptop with ATI 2021 and could open the .tib file in Explorer and see the disk contents with no issue.  This shows that it was possible to put both the boot media and the initial full backup .tib file on the same DVD whether that would be the complete .tib file or the first part of a multi-disc sequence of .tib files.

Just for context, only the .tib file showed on the DVD, not the bootable media files, so it is possible that your first DVD only contains boot media with no .tib file content.

Dear Steve,

It is extremely kind of you to have gone through all this trouble.  I really appreciate it.  Yes, it could be that the first DVD contains the bootable information only.  I have examined the DVD with IsoBuster and it cannot find anything, although it also detects many errors on the disc and this could point towards a corrupted file, unreadable disc.  I could try to take the disc to a data recovery company.  In any case, it does not look like I can do anything with the other tib files without the first disc, can't I?

Once again, thank you very much for all your time and help.

Ramon

Ramon, unfortunately if any part of a backup .tib archive is missing then it is like having a jigsaw puzzle with up to a quarter of the puzzle pieces missing!  Acronis provide no tools to try to recover data from incomplete backup archive files!

Oh, what a shame.  In any case, thank you very much Steve for going through all the trouble to help me.

Kind regards

Ramon

Ramon,

I just had the same thing happen after moving some tib files to a new drive. This happens when you move incremental backups from their original location. Copy all your tib files to one folder so you won't have to keep swapping DVDs in and out during the restore. You must have a complete set of the tib files for the backup. When you are prompted for Vol 1, browse the the tib file with sequence v1 (your naming convention could vary, but something along the lines of BackupName_b1_s5_v1.tib). You will next get prompted for v2, v3 etc. Once Acronis has registered the location of all the tib files in the set, then you should be able to browse the files in your back up. Hope this works for you!
