Not last volume error

Thread solved

Hi, I have Acronis True Image 2020. A few days ago my Windows PC crashed and I was unable to restore it using the Windows repair option. I booted the PC using a Acronis Rescue Media USB that I had created. When I tried to restore the Widows SSD the backup files did not show in my backup drive. I ended up using a spare hard drive with Windows and Acronis installed and then restored the backup to my SSD using the full Acronis program. This was a very long procedure.

Once my system was up and running again I tried to simulate the scenario using the USB rescue drive and again I couldn't see the backups on my backup drives. I then discovered that I could view the files if I changed the file list to "all files". I tried to restore from this but just got a error "Not Last Volume". I have looked at various suggestions online but haven't had any success. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ian, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but only questions at this time!

Which type of rescue media did you create on your USB media?

What version of ATI was used to create the rescue media?

The above questions are important as only the ATI 2020 (or later) rescue media can recognise the new .tibx backup files created by 2020 for any new Disks & Partitions backups.

There are 3 possible versions of rescue media, one using Linux, and two using WindowsPE with one created from the Windows Recovery Environment (Simple) and the other that would require installing the Windows ADK & PE Kit files.

What type of backup drive are you using to store your backup files, and how is this connected to your computer?  What partition scheme is used for the backup drive (NTFS, exFAT... )?

Next, when booting from the rescue media, did you ensure that a full shutdown had been done first, to avoid issues that can be caused if Windows Fast Start is enabled (which puts the PC into a hybrid sleep state akin to hibernation on shutdown)?

Finally, with regards to the 'not last volume' error, have you removed or deleted any files related to the backup task?

The new .tibx files have many more dependencies that were present for the older .tib file format, and all files in the .tibx version chains must be present regardless of using either incremental or differential or even full backups only.  This is because file information is tracked in the metadata for .tibx files!  If you see a 12kb .tibx file associated with your backup chains, this must not be deleted as is essential!

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your reply.

I created Acronis media builder to create my USB.

My version of ATI is True Image 2020 Build 25700

I use a Internal Hard Drive to backup my files and system. It is NTFS format.

I did ensure that the system was fully shut down before attempting recovery.

I didn't delete any any of the backup files initially but, after failing to get any success, I deleted all the backup files and restarted the backup scheme from scratch.

I hope this information helps.

Manty thanks

Ian

Ian, what version of Windows OS do you have here?  Is it Windows 10?

What BIOS mode is used by the OS to boot the PC?
Please run the msinfo32 command from the Windows desktop and look for BIOS mode in the right panel of the report this produces.  Does this show UEFI or Legacy / a drive make?

When you boot from the Acronis Rescue Media, are you using the same BIOS mode as the OS?

Sorry that I still cannot offer any answers here as still trying to understand the issue?

If you can capture any screen images of what you are seeing, that can always help!

Hi Steve,

I created the rescue disk shortly after upgrading to ATI 2020. I created a USB pen drive using the simple Rescue Media Builder. I didn't really give much thought as to whether it would be suitable should I encounter the problem I had last week!

On reading through your comments I thought I should try to create another Rescue USB. This time I used the Acronis Universal Restore and I noticed it was more detailed than my previous USB.

I have tested this on my system and it works without any problems.

I am still unsure why the simple rescue option doesn't work but I am pleased that I now have a suitable solution.

Thank you very much for your help. Your detailed comments have enabled me to arrive at a satisfactory outcome.

Kind regards

Ian
