OEM Windows OS

Thread needs solution

I have a question: I am trying to clone my OEM Windows 10 v20H2 OS and move it to another new, bare metal computer. Can Acronis True Image do the job? Thank you.

Brian, welcome to these public User Forums.

The answer to your question is that this may be possible provided the differences between the old PC and the new one are not too great with regards to the hardware and devices, but you may have issues with activation of your OEM Windows license after moving it to new hardware as this is currently activated based on the old hardware signature.

Typically you can migrate Windows 10 from one PC system to another by using Acronis to Backup the source PC then Recover that backup image to the new PC without needing to use the Acronis Universal Restore feature - this enabled by the better hardware handling available in Windows 10.

If doing a simple Recovery doesn't produce a working Windows 10 PC, then you would need to use Acronis Universal Restore and provide additional device drivers needed for the new PC.

If you are building the new PC yourself, then most device drivers are provided along with the new motherboard or can be downloaded from the makers support web site.

I concur with @Steve Smith. The OEM licence conditions would not allow you do do what you want to do, although you may get away with it if you are lucky. Other regular forum contributors can offer more informed advice on your likelihood of success. If you are unable to activate on the new PC, you will need a new full licence - you cannot (in my experience) use an OEM licence to activate such a installation. You can, however, install the OEM version, activate it (preferably associating it with your Microsoft account), then recover the old installation to the new PC. The new OEM licence will need to be of the same type, for example Window 10 Home x64. Alternatively you could purchase a full licence code - you can get them cheaply if you search the net; there is a risk that they may be a bit dodgy but in my experience they have always worked OK. If the advertised price is something silly like US$20, then the risks of it not working are far greater.
