Problems backup: Can't read file/disk
I use HP-laptop with a SSD and an external HDD with my photo-collection. I can make a backup of my SSD with TrueImage 2018 and 2020 but when I include the HDD in the backup, the software shows 'read-errors' with the external HDD.
When I check that HDD no problems are reported, I also can normally access that disk.
How to fix this?

Bertram,
To start, I would separate your drive backups into 2 different tasks. Backup the internal SSD using a disk backup as task #1.
Backup the external HDD using a disk backup as task #2.
If backup #1 works - cool. If backup #2 works - cool. If either backup fails, the other should hopefully still run and be OK for now and you can then work on isolating the issues with the other drive separately. I would recommend always backing up each physical disk separately.
Also, where are your backups being written to - a different external drive that is not either of these two, I hope?
As Steve mentioned, your logs should hopefully identify the issue(s) a little bit more. And how are you checking the external HDD for errors (what tools and/or what commands)?

Steve Smith wrote:Bertram, more information is needed please.
How is your external HDD connected. i.e. USB 2, USB 3, eSATA etc? : USB 3
What size is your external HDD drive? : 4 TB (but only 200 GB used)
Where are you intending to backup the HDD to? Is this another, different drive? Yes
Which actual version of ATI are you using here? ATI 2020
Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your backup operation. This should provide more information on why you are seeing any error messages?

Also when I backup SSD and HDD separately the error occurs when I backup the HDD. Backup of SDD is no problem.
And of course: the backup-drive is another, different HDD. I checked the HDD with CHKDSK

Bertram, from the above (translated) log data, this looks like it is a VSS snapshot issue on your computer and there should be more information in the Windows Event logs.
I would recommend downloading & running the Acronis VSS Doctor tool then letting it fix any issues that it identifies and can fix.

I would try two things here.
1, run the VSS Doctor tool and see if it finds and/or can repair any VSS issues: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/vss-diagnostic-free-tool/
2. the second error says it can't find the device (not sure if that is to backup or to write the backup too). Go back into the task and re-pick the source and destination (even if it looks exactly the same) and then press "run backup now" right afterwards and see if it still fails, or not.

Thanks! It works again!
Have a nice weekend.
