question about acronis ability

Thread needs solution

I have a self-built pc that I was dual booting Ubuntu & Windows 7 on. Last year, I deleted my Ubuntu installation while prepping an external hard disk drive. Boneheaded mistake, I know. I got Ubuntu reinstalled, and have been using it for the last several months with no issues. I even upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04. The problem is, when I attempt to boot to my Windows 7 drive, I get the Grub recovery menu and can't get to Windows. If I use Acronis True Image to back up my Windows 7 drive, will it be bootable so that I can then upgrade to Windows 10?

Vinie, welcome to these public User Forums.

Normally if you have Windows installed on your computer then install any Linux OS such as Ubuntu, it should automatically add the Windows OS to the Grub2 menu options during the install phase for Ubuntu.

Just making a backup of your Windows 7 drive and restoring it back will not make it boot into Windows.

If you have a Windows Install disc for Windows 10, then you could try doing a Start up repair using that to get Windows 7 booting again, but this will overwrite your Grub2 boot loader and stop you from booting into Ubuntu.

Effectively, you will need to put back a standard Windows MBR on the drive to get Windows 7 to boot.
