Red Dot When Trying To Clone Disc? Win7 64Bit Dell XPS 8700 Desctop

Thread solved

Ok so yesterday I tried to clone and got the red dot w/ white X so I reformatted the disc and then the the windows error checking tool. After that it ran fine and I did this from the Acronis dashboard w/o booting from Acronis.

So today I formatted the same HD and rand the Windows Error checking tool, the tried to clone the disc and again got the red dot and was able to complete.

So now Im running the Acronis Drive cleaner   so it will take some time.

Also I tried running it from the Acronis Boot disc and same issue? Even though the HD Im backing up too seems to work fine could that still be the issue?

Any other ideas? I also tried cloning to a ssd drive after doing a format as well as a Windows error checking tool same issue.

This app is designed to securely erase the drive contents, and except by chance it is unlikely to solve the problem you are seeing. I would have run the disk drive manufacturer's utility on both the source and target disk, as that is more likely to find problems with the disk. Most of these utilities have both a quick test and an extended test; some issues will only be found and hopefully corrected by the extended test. Extended test will take much longer. If there is an option to "check free space" select it as the problem may be in the free space and only pops up when writing to free space.

Before going to all this trouble I would have checked the log files to see what they disclose: to access the log files you will need to use MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 2.1.1).

It is unclear how you were undertaking the clone; were you using the recovery media or form within Windows? Unfortunately, cloning can go badly wrong (particularly when doing it from withing Windows, particularly when cloning the drive containing the operating system; the consensus is that it is far safer to do a backup then restore.

I was using Acronis 2020 to clone the disc. The Hd I was cloning to was used and I do not know how old so I just ordered a new one and will retry when it arrives,

Like I think I mentioned I had the issue yesterday when I first tried  to run but after I formatted the disc and then ran the Windows ckdsk tool it cloned fine but today not the case.

I rand the slave drive again through the windows check disc tool and checked the lower box to fix and issues or what ever they call it.

The from the acronis on dashboard I was able to finally clone the hd and it passed successfully.

Update, I ran the Window disc tool and also checked off the repair or what ever they call it in the lower box and ran it.

It was back ok showing no errors so I tried it and this time no red dot w white x. It seems that is what I ended up doing last time and now it seems to be running correctly.

It will be a few hours so I will report back later.

Worked fine
