Renaming tibx files

Thread solved

The FAQ for 2020 tibx files says that you cannot rename them.
Currently, using ATI 2019, I rename the tib files that I copy for off-site backup.

I guess I cannot do this if I go to the tibx format.

You cannot rename the backup tasks that create .tibx files in ATI 2020, that option is not presented to users.

You could copy & rename the .tibx files from your backup destination provided that you do this for all of the files but this may cause issues later as ATI also seems to remember the original name(s) for these files and will object if they have been renamed!

The best solution is to always store your backup files in unique folders using the name that best identifies them, then copy the whole folder contents when doing so for offline backup protection.

As Steve says, there are many advantages to creating a separate folder for each backup task - including the ability to use a descriptive name. Particularly important when backing up to a NAS for multiple devices.

I would also recommend submitting a Feedback requesting the Rename feature be provided for the new .tibx format.  Acronis has heard this request before, but I don't think it can hurt if more customers tell them it's important.

Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office Essentials, Build 39703
Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1, OS build 19043.1348

Rename still does not rename the TIBX full filename and any differential filenames.

I am unclear why they have it since it does not work.
Am I missing something?
Should this be considered a bug?

Thank you for the feedback.

My PC with Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office on it is currently in pieces on my study floor - getting a small storage upgrade, so I cannot test it. However ATI 2021 I am able to rename (or so I assume) but get this warning message:

I did not proceed with the renaming but presumably it will work.

IanL-S Thank you for the feedback.

I just received feedback from the Acronis Customer Central, Acronis Support Professional.

Hello John,

Thank you for contacting Acronis Customer Central. My name is Abedin and I will work with your ticket number.

If I understand correctly, your concern about rename of backup versions

I would like to inform you that it is a design behaviour of Acronis application rename option that allows you to rename for the backup job, not for the backup versions because if we make changes for the backup version backup script will get corrupted that is a reason we would not be able to rename the backup versions either it may be incremental or differential version

I wish you a good day!

I just emailed him the following question:

What is the procedure to rename drive files like MyBackup.tibx, MyBackup-0001.tibx, etc.?
Please provide a detailed work flow for doing this.

Thank you for your help,
John

What is the procedure to rename drive files like MyBackup.tibx, MyBackup-0001.tibx, etc.?
Please provide a detailed work flow for doing this.

There no work flow for doing what you ask!  Once you see either the 12KB size .tibx file or have files using -000x in the backup chain then there is metadata associated with the backups that is stored within the files and in the internal tracking database, where renaming the files will break the backup chain.

The only time when it may be ok to rename backup .tibx files is when there is only one such file that has been created which at that point could be considered to be independent.

As per the answer from Support, the rename option only applies to the backup task and to any new files created after the rename was done.  Existing files for the same task will always have the original task name for the files.
