Restore

Thread solved

Hello Forum,

I'm trying to do Restore and the official documentation is horrible and confusing. Nowhere do I find an example of how to restore from multiple versions. All the examples assume only one version. If I have done a Full BU and I called it BU1, it gets saved as BU1.tibx

My scheme is incremental with "Make a Full after 3 versions". I have my FULL +3 incremental labeled:
PAV-1-1.tibx
PAV-1-1_inc_b1_s2_v1.tibx
PAV-1-1_inc_b1_s3_v1.tibx
PAV-1-1_inc_b1_s4_v1.tibx

Q#1: Why are there multiple files since according to KB63444 all incremental files get written to the same root/FULL file.

Q#2 In what order do I need to restore these files?

Again their User Maual info stinks. They show an example plan labeled "System partition" and write this": "...then first incremental backups (until next full backup) will be written to the same file "System partition.tibx"

What are the "first" incremental backups? And if they were written to the same file, then why in my files are there multiple versions indicated by the  " _inc_" in the name?

Then they say "...to recover the entire work from 4.tibx file (it's the 3rd file after the FULL) you need to have all backup versions..." That's it! Nothing that tells us "start with 4, then 3, then..."

To makes things worse, their documentation (KB63444) says on p2 that all incremental versions after the FULL .tibx get written to the same "FULL.tibx". That was supposed to be the reason for the new file structure. That's not what my files show as indicated above.
Q#3 So, if that's the case, then why are there multiple versions listed?
Q#4 Why when I tried to Restore did it default to the most recent BU instead of the original FULL so I can build back from that point?

I hope I've been clear and someone can help me understand this Program because I'm close to leaving Acronis and go for Macrium Reflect.

Jorge, welcome to these public User Forums.

My scheme is incremental with "Make a Full after 3 versions". I have my FULL +3 incremental labeled:
PAV-1-1.tibx
PAV-1-1_inc_b1_s2_v1.tibx
PAV-1-1_inc_b1_s3_v1.tibx
PAV-1-1_inc_b1_s4_v1.tibx

I have no idea how you have ended up with files using the names you have listed above as you appear to have a mix of old and new naming conventions.

The files using _inc_ in the names are using the convention from older versions and should never have the .tibx extension.  Such incremental files should be using .tib and only used for Files & Folders backups on ATI 2020 or later versions.

There are no separate incremental files for .tibx backups, these are consolidated with the initial full backup so would be stored in the PAC-1-1.tibx file.

The process for recovering any incremental backup chain is just the same as it has been with all recent versions of Acronis, i.e. you simply would select the most recent incremental file or .tibx file and Acronis will work backwards through the chain of files to complete the recovery.

There is no need to do multiple recoveries from different files in the chain.

Steve, thanks for clarifying what should not have needed clarifying if the people writing documentation would use the product intead of writing what I suspect is a first draft of docs (see attatchments).

Do you see how they confuse things by saying :  "...to recover the entire work from 4.tibx file you need to have all backup versions..."

I repeat this point because I'm hoping you have some influence with Acronis considering your Forum status.

Also, is there a way for me to see the activity of this thread without needing to remember what Forum group I posted to and hoping to find it when I scroll through all the topics?

I created a ticket for this issue directly with Support. How do I know when they respond? Will they send an email?

Thanks

Jorge, unfortunately the MVP's have no real influence with Acronis - we are just experienced users of their products who supplement their support team by helping users like yourself!

There are new rules associated with .tibx backups which bring a lot more interdependence on the files that are created and metadata that connects those files!

For this reason, it is best to never manually delete or move any .tibx files as it can cause the backup chain to be rendered 'corrupt'!

See the following KB documents published by Acronis with regards to .tibx files.

KB 63518: Acronis True Image 2020: do not delete first tibx file

KB 63227: Acronis True Image: Do not delete .TIB or .TIBX files outside of Acronis True Image

KB 63498: Acronis True Image 2020-2021: new tibx backup format FAQ

KB 63425: Acronis True Image: Limitations of tibx backups

KB 63516: Acronis True Image 2020: Incremental backups do not create separate files when using new backup format

KB 63445: Acronis True Image 2020: how to view and manage backup versions in new backup format

KB 63444: Acronis True Image 2020 and 2021: tibx backups in local destinations

With regard to support from Acronis, all versions of True Image are not supported!  Only the most recent Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office subscription product is in support.

How Acronis respond to support tickets depend on how you raised the same.  I always have used the email method because it allows to keep a complete track of what is being discussed and the responses received etc.  If you have elected to use email, then they should respond to you using the same but with some delays due to the Easter holiday and their staff being unavailable.  The first response that you should have received is an email advising the support ticket number / reference which will give the name of the support person who will initially deal with the case.  Once you have that support reference number, you can send them more emails to chase status etc.

For this Forum topic, you can simply setup a browser bookmark for yourself so that you can check status of updates etc, plus you should receive emails to notify you of the same though these seem to come sporadically as the forum team or moderator approves posts!

Steve, I'm going to beg your indulgence in asking if you looked at my attachment. You make no reference to my point that their docs stink, unless you don't want to go on record saying that (smile)

Is it necessary to have all the tibx files as indicated in their docs or just the most recent tibx. Do you agree that the doc is confusing?

So if I have a job named SysBU with files dated Aug 2021 to Sept 2021

and SysBU-2 with files  Aug 2021 to Apr 2022

to get the most recent backup I would choose SysBU-2, right?

Q1:Will ATI go back and start from Aug 2021 and restore everything in the chain that's associated with this job?

Q2: In that window of time I went from Win10 to Win 11. Will this cause a problem?

Thanks.

Unfortunately it is necessary with the way Acronis looks to have implemented the use of metadata with .tibx files.  Removing or moving any files outside of using the Clean up versions or automatic cleanup tools will cause problems!

Q1. No, that is not how it works.  Recovery will only be for the selected version not any previous ones unless all these files are part of the same version chain.

Q2. Assuming that there are different version chains involved, same answer as for Q1.
