Restore system with VHDX file

Thread needs solution

Hi,

My hard disk (512 GB) died recently. I had to replace it with a new one (500 GB). I did a backup some months ago through the Windows utility tool (Windows 7 backup and restore). From this backup, I caught a VHDX file (215 GB). I tried to restore my backup with the Restore image tool of Windows, but couldn't proceed the restauration. I caught the error 0x80042412 mid-process. I don't know much about computer, but from what I read online it's possibly because my new disk is smaller than the original.

I read online that Acronis True Image could help me so I downloaded the 2020 version. All the tutorials/posts I see are with older versions of Acronis or not explained step by step. I need someone to explain me with baby steps how to:

Possibility 1) Convert VHD file to TIB and then restore with Acronis.

Possibility 2) Mount VHD file then backup with Acronis to create a TIB.

Possibility 3) Backup the VHD file (I don't know if it backups only the file or it takes in consideration that it's a whole system)

Possibility 4) Use the cloning tool

Possibility 5) Anything else that would work. It's been 5 days since I'm looking how to restore my system without results.

I'm not good with computer and previously followed catastrophic procedures not knowing what I was doing. It's been a nightmare so any help is very appreciated.

Thank you,

M

Meili, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please see forum topic: Restore from VHDX Windows image backup? which covers the same question asked by other users in the forums.  See the official statements from Acronis towards the end of the topic.

Meili,

You could convert the VHDX file inot a Windows WIM file and then Apply that WIM image to a new disk.  You will need a running PC to do this and use Windows PowerShell.  In the link below follow the instructions in the Answer with the green check mark.

Good Luck:
