Restore .tibx anyone ?

Thread solved

This might seem like a superfluous question, but given recent events ...

Has anyone tried to do a full restore (not just single files or folders) of his system using Acronis' 2020 new .tibx archive format ?

Heiner, the answer to your question is a definite yes for lots of users in the forums, including all those who participated in the Beta testing phase for ATI 2020 where it would have been foolish to not test such a basic function of the new version.

Recovery is not working for me.  Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Kind regards,

Michael

Michael, sorry but need a lot more information than just that recovery is not working for you?

What are you trying to recover, how are you trying to do it?  What symptoms are you seeing?
Are there any error messages given?
What OS is involved?

Thanks for responding , Steve.  First I am using Windows 10 Pro and the latest build (25510).

I select the backup for the Backup list (it only show the drive where the backup exists, but not any one specific backup file).  I then select Files from the Recovery tab.  Now I can see only the main drive for my laptop and my secondary drive.  I click on the secondary drive which holds the backup I wish to recover.  However, there are no other options showing.  The (secondary) drive does not expand and there are no files listed in the right-hand frame.  So, I have nothing for me to choose.  I don't have any error messages either.

Does that cover it?

Kind regards,

Michael

Further, I also tried to recover by Partition, but that only changes the name of the destination drive while it remains empty.  The destination is actually on a third (internal) drive partition that is empty.

Kind regards,

Michael

P.S.  I have a Lenovo P72 with an i7-8750, two NVMe M.S SSD and one SATA SSD, and 8GB RAM.

Michael, sorry but again more clarification is needed here:

Are you attempting to recover from within the Windows ATI GUI here (it sounds like you are)?

Are you trying to just recover some files, or doing a disk or partition recovery?  You have mentioned both.

What type of backup is involved here?  Is this a Disks & Partitions backup (required for doing a partition backup)?

If you can capture screen images of the steps you are trying to follow or else document in more details exactly what you are doing, that would be most helpful.

If you are wanting to just recover some files or folders from a backup .tibx file, then you can do this by just double-clicking on the .tibx file in Explorer then using normal Copy & Paste controls after navigating to the containing folder within the archive.

See the ATI 2020 User Guide: Recovering partitions and disks for detailed steps for recovering this type of data from within Windows.

See KB 63295: Acronis True Image 2020: How to restore your computer with WinPE-based or WinRE-based media for the recommended method of doing this outside of Windows.

Yes

Are you trying to just recover some files, or doing a disk or partition recovery?  You have mentioned both.

I am trying to recover a backup .tibx file to an empty partition, so I think it's a partition, not a disk because that will wipe out my entire drive on which contains the desired partition destination.

What type of backup is involved here?  Is this a Disks & Partitions backup (required for doing a partition backup)?

It is a Disk backup.

If you can capture screen images of the steps you are trying to follow or else document in more details exactly what you are doing, that would be most helpful.

I'll try:

Step 1 - Select desired backup from the Backups list;

Step 2 - Select Partition under the Recovery tab;

Step 3 - Select the Destination partition from the Recover to drop down list;

Step 4 - Click on Manage just above the Recover to field and change name of the Label to match its original name;

Step 5 - Click on the Recover now button and wait for process to complete;

Step 6 - Recovery is complete (note that the name of the destination drive and letter is wrong, should be Utility Disk (E:);

Step 7 - Confirm that the image has actually been recovered to E: Utility Disk (drive/partition is actually empty; and

Step 8 - Confirm if the image was actually recovered to G: Transition Disk (drive actually remains the same with the backup .tibx files intact.

end

If you are wanting to just recover some files or folders from a backup .tibx file, then you can do this by just double-clicking on the .tibx file in Explorer then using normal Copy & Paste controls after navigating to the containing folder within the archive.

Thanks for that info.

Michael, I have testing doing recovering a single partition on my own system to a spare external USB drive using your steps above and all was done correctly with the recovered data showing as expected on the external drive.

I reformatted the destination partition on the external drive before started to ensure that this was empty and would therefore show that the data had been recovered to it, which it did.

Thanks, Steve.  I discovered that when I was doing a backups that they were getting corrupted because I had a previous backup in the Backups list.  If I clear the Backups list (by removing the name from the list) then my backup will work.  Then when I restore it, it works properly.  This was after a lot of trial and error, closing and opening ATI and restarting my PC.  It wasn't obvious but that seems to be my problem.  Well, it's working now so I just have to be careful.

Thanks for taking the time to help me.

Kind regards,

Michael

Michael, glad to read that the issue is sorted but sorry it took time & effort to find out why!  Thanks for sharing.
