Restored files with file ownership "work" cannot be opened

Thread needs solution

I'm doing a full backup of my Windows 10 system (1809) where my company has activated Windows Information Protection. The backup runs fine without any error. When I try to open a restored file where the ownership is marked to "work", I get an error message "interface not supported" and I can't open the file. That means, that my backup is holey, as only files marked as "personal" can be restored and opened. Is there a workaround? As I have local admin rights on the system, I can change a single file from "work" to "personal" via context menu, but I can't do this for a whole file structure (prevented by Windows 10). Does someone knows a way to do this as in a batch job? e.g. PowerShell command? Kind regards, Mike

Michael, welcome to these public User Forums.

I have no experience in using Windows Information Protection and have not seen this mentioned in any other forum topics that I can remember seeing.

My first question has to ask:  Can you open the problem 'work' files prior to them being backed up and later restored?

If yes, then I can only recommend opening a Support Case direct with Acronis to investigate whether the file permissions are being altered in some way by the backup and restore process?

Mike,

WIP, as it is called in the IT world is implemented by your work's IT department.  It is used to restrict your usage of work data.

To backup, copy, etc. work data you will need to talk with your IT dept. head.  If you use is justifiable they may be willing to allow you to backup such data with Acronis True Image.
