Single Version Backups creating multiple backups

Thread needs solution

I used the WD Edition of True Image for years and recently upgraded to 2020. I'm familiar with the settings.

I run one backup every day, alternating between three different drives. The parameters are the same in all three cases.

I prefer Single Version Backups, where the last version is replaced by the new version. On two of my drives I'm finding that TI is creating a new backup and not replacing the old one.

Is there an additional setting that's needed?

I never ran into this problem with the ancient version I was using.

Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.

Clarification please. Are you using one backup task but using 3 different external drives?

If so, that may be the explanation of why things are not working as you expect. You should have separate backup tasks for each USB HDD. Otherwise Acronis will get hopelessly confused due to the way it recognises the backup destination.

See KB 62741: Acronis True Image: rotating backup destination disks requires separate backup plans per destination disk

Single Version Backups for .tibx Disks & Partitions backup still follow the same rules as for other .tibx files, i.e. when the first backup is created, this is a single file but when the next backup is made, the first file becomes a 12Kb file and the new file is created with the same name but with a -0001 suffix appended.  This will look to be different files but follow the new .tibx rules.

See the following KB documents published by Acronis with regards to .tibx files.

Thanks, Ian and Steve for your replies.

These are three different tasks, to three different drives, with the same basic parameters.

This caught my eye from the KB articles Steve posted:

>>63518: Acronis True Image 2020: do not delete first tibx file

I did this on one of the drives: I thought that it was a backup that was somehow interrupted and therefore incomplete.

What would be the fix for this error on my part? Should I delete the task and its backups and start from scratch?

(This is a very new installation of Windows 10 Pro: I'm not concerned about the earliest backups I've made because every day there have been major changes in terms of what is installed.)

Given your situation and the fact that this is a new install I would start over.  Use True Image to delete the backup jobs and the backup files as well.  Click on the the down arrow symbol (v) to the right of each job will give you the option of Delete.  In the popup window that appears choose Delete entirely to remove both the task (job) and the associated backup files.

Thanks, Enchantech. I'm a heavy Pro Tools user and just yesterday I finished installing the main program and the ~75 plugins (which are all separate installations). So there is no way I'd want to go back to any of those old backups.

I followed your advice and started from scratch. Now everything seems to be in order.

I'm grateful that Steve posted those KB articles. I had no idea that deleting the files I did would render those backups useless.

Thanks again to you both.

Yes, much has changed with the application over time.  Fortunately the learning curve is not steep.
