Slow backup, cannot delete existing backup

Thread needs solution

Two issues:

1.  Backup is really slow.  It takes 2 hours 10 minutes to backup 165GB on SSD.  It seems very slow, right?

2.  Trying to delete existing backup - get message: cannot delete backup.

Help most appreciated.

Thank you.

The speed of the backup depends on the speed achievable by both the source (drive being backup) and the target (location of backup) drives. The speed of the backup drive will depend on its native speed and the max throughput of the interface being used.

Please provide details of the both the source and target drives, how they are attached to the computer, the operating system being used, for Example Windows 10 Pro x64 build 2004, and the build of ATI 2020 being used.

Possible reasons for slow backup include connecting a USB 3 external drive to a USB 2 port, using a port on the front/side of a desktop computer rather than one on the back-pane. Those ports are attached to headers on the main board and the connections can be less reliable.

Another possibility is that because of issues with the source disk, that a sector by sector backup is being made. We will get to that

Just checked speed of some of my backups, and provide the following (for full backup):

  • 110.5 GB backed up, time 1 hour 40 minutes
  • 115.6 GB backed up, time 2 hour 4 minutes
  • 113.2 GB backed up, time 1 hour 8 minutes

There is a bit of variability in the speed above, which is likely due to differing levels of fragmentation and the amount of free space on the target drive. In my case is is an internal 3 TB WD Blue SATA HDD attached to port 0 of the onboard SATA controller. So the speeds you are seeing may be "normal". (Not sure if it is relevant, but my backups except for the last one were done with the ATI 2021 beta.

The reason why you cannot delete the backup is that it is protected from deletion, other than through ATI 2020, by Active Protection. You will need to temporarily disable active protection to delete the backup in Explorer - this will cause problems with the Acronis internal data base so it should be avoided if possible.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Answers to your questions:

1.  Source drive is internal SSD 500GB.

2.  Target drive is internal 6TB SATA.

3.  Windows 10 Pro - 64, build 2004.

4.  ATI version 2020 build 25700.

5.  I was not specific about the deletion of backups - I was trying to do this WITHIN ATI.

Maybe, according to your backup times, my results are not unusual - it would be nice if it could be faster.

Thanks for the additional information.

One thing I forgot to say was I always use max compression, which will extend the backup time.

I cannot immediately think of an obvious reason why you could not delete the backup. You could try removing the backup and then deleting the backup using Explorer. You will need to temporarily disable Active Protection to delete the backup.
