Startup Recovery Manager starts on all Windows 10 boots when USB disk attached

Thread needs solution

I upgraded from 2019 to 2021 and now on every reboot when the backup USB disk is attached, the computer comes up in the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM).  When I tried to deactivate it in "Tools", I got a message saying Click Here to Activate.  I tied that and then rebooted and tried again and got the message Click Here to Deactivate.  There was no effect on the boot process.  I did not have ASRM activated in ATI 2019 before the upgrade.  I do not see the F11 prompt during boot.

How do I get ASRM deactivated, so my computer boots normally with the backup USB attached?

Landy, welcome to these public User Forums.

If you only see the Acronis recovery environment when your USB disk is attached then this is not ASRM and will be coming from an Acronis Survival Kit created on the USB disk and the fact that your PC BIOS is setup to boot from the USB Disk ahead of booting from Windows.

Thanks for the info Steve.  How would I remove the Acronis Survival Kit that I must have inadvertently created?  Right now I have to unplug the backup USB to boot and then plug it back in for backups to work.  Obviously not where I want an Acronis Survival Kit installed!

Landy, all you should have to do is to ensure that in the UEFI/BIOS that:

  • if the PC is configured for UEFI boot, that the fist boot devise is Windows Boot Manager; or
  • if the PC is configured for BIOS/Legacy boot, that the first boot device is the drive on which Windows is installed.

Hope this helps

Ian

Landy, Acronis Survival Kit is designed to be created on external USB disk drives - this is so that the same drive can be used to both hold your Acronis backup image(s) and also work as bootable rescue media for meeting any future recovery needs.

As Ian has mentioned above, what you need to do is to change the boot device order in your BIOS settings so that Windows gets booted first rather than any USB device.  If you are not sure exactly how to do this, then the first step is to identify what key can be used during the initial phase of booting your computer to go into the BIOS, i.e. this can be the ESC, DEL, F1, F2 keys etc.  Unfortunately there is no universal key option, each PC maker / BIOS vendor picks their own but a quick search in Google for your PC should tell you the correct key!

Once you are in the BIOS, then look at the Boot Priority settings where you will find that you have USB devices (USB HDD or Key) at the top of the list and then Windows (either Windows Boot Manager or the OS drive) below this.  There are normally options shown for how to move the order up / down.  Once it has been changed, then save the changes and reboot.
