TI2020 - I only Want .TIB not .TIBX files in my Backup Folder (TIBX Take Up Space)

Thread needs solution

I have read read Steve Smith's "How to create a Disk backup as .tib (not .tibx)" OP hacking suggestion for v.2019.

But even if applicable to v2020 (just started using trial for now, have been using TI since v.9 through v.2015) it is too complicated for me to handle. I have a clinical anxiety condition, so can get overwhelmed).

I do not backup to cloud, only to local backup mechanical drive from SSD OS. The size of the .TIB look right (i.e. 100 Gb), the .TIBX look too small (40 gb) and are piling up, taking up room.

While I've been using computers since Windows 3.1, I don't like or use compression in terms of backups. I wish I could use my v.2015, but can't install it on Windows 10, works fine on Windows 7 -- and there are no .TIBX in v.2015.

So...

Q-1: Is it safe for me to delete the .TIBX and leave only the .TIB or are they somehow interconnected and dependant on one another?

Q-2: Is there now a setting in v2020 whereby only .TIB files are created? (Steve suggested that such an option should be included in future TI, and I agree).

I would appreciate someone from Acronis to respond here also.

Thank you.

Philip, the tutorial topic How to create a Disk backup as .tib (not .tibx) was created solely for ATI 2020 and does not apply to any previous versions.  Note: only the first 2 posts in the topic are really relevant to the topic - the following posts tend to have gone off topic and dealing with other issues being discussed by the MVP's!

With ATI 2020, all new Disk & Partition backup tasks now use the new .tibx file format and there is no other choice about this (unless you take the 'hack' approach per my topic).

The actual size of data should not be any different to the prior .tib format used in ATI 2019 and earlier versions.

The key difference is how the backups are handled with the new .tibx file format.

Users no longer will see separate Full and Incremental backup files for their version chain - this is because all these files are now stored within a single .tibx file instead.

If you create a backup using Differential files, then you will see separate files with sequential numbers appended to the task / file name, where it is more difficult to tell which is which unless you also look at the Activity page information for the backup task!

I believe that once you get used to the way the new files work, that you won't be as anxious about them.  Part of my reason for saying this is that Acronis have introduced this new .tibx file format in order to enhance the reliability and security of the backup chains.  This file format is used in their premium Acronis Backup business products and is being consolidated now across the Acronis True Image products too.

Time for some screen images to illustrate the above comments:

First for an Incremental backup task where a single .tibx file is created:

The activity information matches the contents of the single .tibx file to show that both the full and incremental backups are stored in the file.

Note: after new backup chains have been created and old ones cleaned up / deleted, you will always see a very small 12kb .tibx file which is used to store metadata for the backup task - this is an important part of the backup chain and must not be deleted.

Next, a Differential backup task with multiple .tibx files with ascending numbers added (also showing the 12kb metadata .tibx file.

Hope the above makes the new file system clearer and easier to understand for you.

@Steve -- As with other OP to which you replied, thanks for reply.  Can't respond yet, just wanted to acknowledge your prompt reply here also.

OT Forum Issue:

BTW - I apologize for both of my OP's being one big block of text instead of how their original form was formatted - with paragraphs, hence easier on the eyes and brain.

Must have copy/pasted from my offline Open Office, and the forum didn't recognize its format, and thus jammed everything into one text block.  Since they were OPs, there was no way to view them and correct them since they needed to be approved.

By then, I doubt that the Edit function was available since I don't know the lag time between a posts being published and the Edit function going away, as it can in many forums.

Which brings me to...

I don't know if it's just a current glitch, but when I hit "Preview" as I just did here, I get a blank page with "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again."  This also happened when I hit Save. So there must be some glitch.

Philip, the forum has seemed to have a few glitches recently, especially with new topic posts where there has been very limited editing function!  I suspect this is in response to various hacking attacks with attempts to insert video links etc..!

Please just use this one topic for your questions around backup file naming to keep this as simple as needed.

@Steve Smith -- First, since forum is still glitchy (can't preview post), I have no idea how this is going look once posted. Hopefully not one big block of text....

It's been a while since I've been here ("Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." ~ John Lennon), so wanted to give a last update on my OP's issue and that of another I have to which your responded - naming backups in backup GUI.

I've had TI since 2005 (started with v.9) and while each version I updated to had its GUI glitches that made it at times difficult to select a restore .tib, the irritation of TI looking for really old, no longer existing backups due to logs, and so on, I've hung in there.

But I've been trying out other backup programs due not being able to install TI 2015 on my new Windows 10  (Acronis Knowledge Base page on how to try to fix it had SIX different things to try out....) and inability to name the backups as I could with that version (top left "pencil" area since I always do only manual, uncompressed full backups.

BTW, every other major consumer backup program that I've tried - Macrium, EaseUS, Paragon allows one to name one's backup -- if one so desires.  So why remove that from TI?

Changing the name in the list of already done backups in TI is counter-intuitive for then one has renamed  the listing of one's previous backup.

In short, if it ain't broke, why "fix" it? Bring back the freakin' pencil - lol.

So...

I'm planning to go with Macrium Reflect 7.  Pricey compared to a 4th upgrade of TI (but using their free version until hopeful Black Friday discount).

But as with Windows 10 vs. 7, newer is IMO not better with TI now and I just don't want to deal with the frustrations.

This is also in part due to no-response to a customer service question submitted with Acronis.

Last, as to the .tib vs. tibx issue:

I discovered that since I only make full (not differential or incremental) backups, at least my soon to expire TI 2020 fortunately made it simple for me by creating only .tib backups -- no tibx in sight, and restores worked fine. That was a relief but not enough to stay with TI.

Anyway, all that said, I appreciate your taking the time and effort in replying to my two issues at this forum. You were thoughtful and thorough.

No reply necessary.
Kind regards,

Philip Knight

Philip, thanks for your update.  The bottom line here is that you, the user, have found a product that does what you need it to do!

I do not work for Acronis but can see no point in trying to convince unhappy users to stay with their products, especially if another product gives them what they want / need.

(I spent too many hours, days, weeks dealing with unhappy customers for the company I worked for before retiring, where I didn't have the same freedom to offer this type of advice.)
