Unable to restore files

Thread needs solution

Hello

Since yesterday, I can't restore files from backup. :(

After selecting and validate files, when ATI calculates the necessary time for the operation, I always have this error message : "Some errors have been detected at the moment of the restoration". I join a screenshot.

I tried with different files, from different date backups : always the same problem.

I used this fonction of ATI many times before and it worked well.

Need some help please. I really need these files ! Thanks

Guillaume, welcome to these public User Forums.

I would recommend trying to open the backup archive in Explorer by double-clicking on it and see if you can navigate around the contents and use normal Copy & Paste controls to restore your files?

See KB 63240: Acronis True Image 2020: how to restore files from a backup (Windows) - and scroll down the document to the section showing how to open .tibx or .tib files in Explorer by double-clicking on the files.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your advice. It's a better (and simply) way to restore files ! I didn't know it.

But, unfortunately, I still have a problem :

- I can navigate in my backups
- I can find the files I need
- I can drag and drop them in a new folder
- but all the files restored are totally empty : 0 bytes each !?

I join a screenshot of restored files.

Guillaume, where were these files backed up from on your PC?

Were these from OneDrive, and if so, do you have the OneDrive 'Files on Demand' option enabled?

Do the files show as being zero bytes size when you look at them within the ATI Backup archive file in Explorer?

The log files for the backup task that created the backup archive may offer more information on what happened when the backup was created, if any errors were reported etc.

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backup using same) then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

The files backed up with ATI are on a disk which is also connected with OneDrive. But all the files remain on the disk, no files are 'on demand'. Onedrive is only another backup method for me.

No, the files have normal sizes in the archive folder.

They look normally saved. It's really a restoration problem.

I will look for the logs and tell you about that.

Hello Steve

Sorry for the delay, I have so much to do !

I downloaded and instaled MVP Assistant.
As my backups use .tibx, here you are the last Backup Worker Log.
I also join the last Demon log, just in case...

For your information, I tried to restore one file today and still unable to open it from explorer. I just can cut/paste or drag/drop but the restored file's size is 0.

Thank you for the log files from when the backup of these files was performed.  These do not show any obvious errors or reasons why the source files would not be available??

A further question:  do these files belong to the same user that is being used to recover them?

Hello

Yes, same user (because I'm the only one on this computer).

I really don't understand why it doesn't work. ATI used to work perfectly before, I often restored files.

Guillaume, I think that we need to go back to the beginning again on this strange issue!

In your initial post for this topic, you wrote:

Do you still get that same error message when restoring files using the ATI GUI recovery option?

If yes, can you provide zipped copies of the Backup Worker and Demon logs for that recovery action, so that we can try to understand what the above error means in context of where it is given?

The Backup Worker log first line on my PC when doing the same recovery action confirms that a restore is being performed.

Hi

Yes, still the same message. Whatever the file I try to restore.

Here you are  Backup Worker and Demon logs for that  recovery action.

See webpage: How to solve error code 0x8007018b - which looks to be similar.

The first test you should try here is to restore the file to a different location and not to the original D:\OneDrive\Perso\Ventes occasion\ location.  You could try this using Copy & Paste in Explorer.  If this works then the issue is being caused by OneDrive locking the target file being replaced and you may need to stop OneDrive / exit the application before trying to do similar restores.

Thanks to decode the logs for me ! :)

I will see the webpage and test with Onedrive stopped but I can already answer about that :" The first test you should try here is to restore the file to a different location and not to the original [...] You could try this using Copy & Paste in Explorer".

I already tried to copy & paste or drag & drop with Explorer (or restore with ATI) to another location (desktop, different folder, ...) and always 0 bytes. :(

Hi Steve

I did a reset of Onedrive as proposed in the indicated webpage.

It works (thanks !) BUT ...

  • not by copy & paste from Explorer, only using ATI GUI Recovery Option
  • during my first attempt, when I restored the 3 sub-folders I wanted, only part of the files they contained were recovered
  • I had to do it a second time, selecting all the files not recovered one by one

Why ?!

Sorry, I have no idea why any restore didn't include all the items selected and had to be repeated!

The restore log (when done from the GUI) may have some more clues possibly?
