What auto-backup settings? I keep running out of space on QNAP

Thread needs solution

I have about 2TB on my NAS for Acronis backups for my one machine.  It seems my backups always are 600-800gb approximately, no matter what type of frequency I select.  About the 4th backup/week, it fails due to no space.  I do not have save the first backup selected.  My data does not change often, but I would like to have a weekly update or be able to cover 30 days recovery time.

What automatic backup settings should I be using to keep backups in place but not go over that 2tb limit?

Also, if anyone has a QNAP NAS, is it possible prior backups are in a deleted folder and still taking up space?  If so, how is this remedied automatically?

What are your backup scheme settings in use here?
What type of backup, i.e. Disks & Partitions or Files & Folders?
What scheme, i.e. Full only, Incremental, or Differential scheme?

If Incremental or Differential, how many such backups before creating a new Full backup?

What automatic cleanup options are you using for this scheme?
Are backup version chains being deleted based on age, or are you using 'Store no more than ? recent version chains'?

If you only have 2TB of space allocated for your backups, then that would equate to a maximum of only 2 backup chains of 600-800GB size with a struggle to fit in a further new Full backup to allow automatic cleanup to run.  Automatic cleanup will only run after a new backup chain has been started successfully, so you need sufficient free space to allow for that extra full backup file before ATI will delete the oldest chain of files.

If you have the option, then I would recommend considering how to split your source data into more than one backup task, i.e. have one task that backs up your Windows OS and all installed applications but have a separate task to back up your user data (documents, music, images etc), not have both in a single task of the size you have quoted.  Doing this will result in smaller backup files and enable automatic cleanup to work when less space is available on your NAS.

The only reason why deleted files should still take up space on any NAS is if you have enabled the recycle bin option for the NAS volume where files are being stored, as then that option would work in a way similar to how the Windows recycle bin works, and needs to be emptied regularly. You would need to check your settings on the QNAP NAS for whether this is enabled as I do not have such a make of NAS.
