Why Cloning Failed

Thread needs solution

Just an end user and not PC knowledgeable. Decided to upgrade my 2T DDC (1.7T free) to a Crucial MX500 - 1T - 2.5" SSD via Acronis True Image but.....failed several times (using Sabrent enclousre & USB). Please help as from all I know, cloning is a straight forward process. :-(

My PC - Dell XPS8700 - Win7 Pro (64bit) with i7-4770 and 2TB.

Error log via MVP LOg Viewer is shown below:

Warren, welcome to these public User Forums.

The problem here is that ATI cannot correctly resize all your partitions from the source drive to fit on the target one.  In particular, it is failing when trying to resize the very large Recovery partition from 73.23 GB -> 72.80 GB

Personally, I would recommend shrinking your main C: OS partition (1.748 TB -> 0.838 TB) to about 750GB size using a tool such as MiniTool Partition Wizard before starting the clone.

Hi, Steve, thank you for your reply. I have never heard of MiniTool Partition Wizard before! Is it hard to use? Guess it is time to learn it all!

You recommended to SHRINK the C-Drive to 750GB. How about Drive "D"? Do I need to do anything to it at all?

Again, I appreciate you time and assistance.

Warren the MiniTool PW is very easy to use but please be careful as it is very powerful!

If you just shrink drive C: then ATI should be able to make any adjustment to drive D with no issues.

After 10 months, sadly to say......my New SSD is still in the box!

I did not do what Steve suggested.....because I do not know how and am scared to even try!

I read somewhere that AOMEI clone software can do 2TB HDD to Crucial MX500 SSD in one shot without "shrinking" and etc. True? If so, I would like to try it. Can I? Should I?

Thank you and you have a good day!

Warren, I would recommend forgetting about using cloning if you are very nervous and using the safer Backup & Recovery method instead.

You should already be making regular full disk backups of your working 2TB HDD disk which provide a safety net for you should any problems arise, such as a bad Windows update, virus etc.

The process using Backup & Recovery is as follows:

  1. Create the Acronis Rescue Media using the 'Simple' method of the builder tool.
  2. Test that you understand how to boot your PC from the Rescue Media using the same BIOS mode as your Windows OS uses.
Note: type the command msinfo32 in Windows to check the BIOS mode - this is shown in the right panel of the report that is shown.  It should say UEFI or else will say either Legacy or give the make/model of your HDD.
  3. Boot your PC from the rescue media and create a standalone Full disk backup to an external backup drive.  Check that this is successful.
  4. Shutdown the PC, remove the original 2TB HDD and replace it by the new 1TB SSD.
  5. Boot from the rescue media and click first on Tools, then on Add new disk.
If your OS BIOS mode was UEFI - then choose GPT for the new disk partition scheme.
If your OS BIOS mode was Legacy - then choose MBR for the partition scheme.
Note: there is no need to create any partition on the new SSD, just leave the space as 'Unallocated'.
  6. Now click on Recovery, and follow the process to recover your full disk backup from step 3. to the new SSD.
  7. When the Recovery has finished, click on Logs and check that all looks good in the log for the recovery.
  8. Shutdown the PC, remove the rescue media and external backup drive, then boot the PC normally into Windows from the SSD.

Steve,

I have worked with acronis software in the past and have a question for you, should I post  here, or start a new post?

James, answered in your new post.
