Acronis 2021 hangs and is blocking my computer, why?

Thread solved

Hi there,

I am using this horrible software since few months now but it started to be really annoying.

Sometimes when I create backup (copying some data, not even 1MB, from D:\something to C:\something), like today, it simply hangs ("not responding" error in the title bar) and blocks my whole computer. I am not even able to start the task manager and if after a while I manage to start the task manager I can't kill Acronis processes. When I restart my PC (Windows 10 Pro) Acronis auto starts and blocks my PC again.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Is there a way to stop Acronis from blocking everything? If not, how do I get my money back?

EDIT: Can this be somehow caused by copying/backuping data into my OneDrive folder? I didn't find any options to upload directly to OneDrive so I am copying files to the local folder. Is that the way to do it correctly?

Cheers

swissbackup, welcome to these public User Forums.

How exactly are you doing these backups / copying data from D:... to C:.. - and what are you backing up / copying here?

Do you have the 'Files on Demand' feature enabled for OneDrive?

All versions of ATI do not work with OneDrive Files on Demand because of the reparse points used by OneDrive to point to data that is stored in their cloud servers.

The Protection features in ATI 2021 will get involved if you are trying to copy or move any ATI archive files (.tib or .tibx) to your OneDrive folder, especially if Files on Demand is involved too!

Thanks for answering Steve.

Not sure what you mean by "how exactly". I set ATI to copy files from a folder on drive D:\ to OneDrive folder on drive C:\. The files are part of a database, which are used in an application I use. I did not disable the "Files on Demand" feature (I didn't even know it exists :)) so I assume it's on. I'll try to disable it.

I'd assume that software like ATI is able to check whether the backup target is OneDrive and warn a user to create such a backup. I spent hours to get access to my PC again.

When you say that you have set ATI to copy files from one folder to your OneDrive folder, which option are you using for this?

Is this a Files & Folders backup task with the OneDrive folder selected as the Destination?  If so, is a backup archive .tib file being created in that OneDrive folder?

The main issues between ATI and OneDrive are when OneDrive is included in the Source for backup tasks.  Using OneDrive as the Destination poses a separate set of issues that are predominantly in the area of Acronis Active Protection and the use of Files on Demand, where I can image OneDrive trying to lock the ATI files to upload them to the Cloud will cause contention between the two applications, with ATI / AAP trying to prevent OneDrive from copying the files and potentially causing a stand-off which results in locking the system!

Is this a Files & Folders backup task with the OneDrive folder selected as the Destination?

This is exactly how it's configured. Thank you, I'll retry with "Files on Demand" turned off and post my result.

Well, turning off files on demand did not work. Creating and running one backup worked but the second time it again blocked my whole PC and it does this after reboot again. I'll try to deinstall it and get my money back, this can't be true. I am spending another 4 hours on this.

I tell you the software is pure nightmare, even blocking users with admin rights from stopping processes and changing files. You don't want to use it.

I opened a support ticket few days ago and now they tell me the German support is overloaded and whether English is OK. Well yeah but it's kinda late nevertheless.

Have you tried creating a backup of the same source data to somewhere else other than your OneDrive folder location, i.e. an external backup drive?

I gave up on Acronis entirely and switched to other solution, I hope to get a refund. Thank you once again for your help Steve.

Good luck with your other solution, hope it goes well for you!
