William, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more questions than answers at this point.

What build version of ATI 2021 do you have?  Build #35860 is the latest build that should be installed.

What type of backup task is involved?  Is this a Disks & Partitions backup, or is it Files & Folders?

What exactly are you backing up with this task?  Is it an internal drive, external drive etc?

Typically if compression is ignored, then this can be because of disk errors such as bad sectors which cause ATI to switch to using 'sector-by-sector' mode for the backup where compression is not used.  Running CHKDSK /F on the the source drives should help identify any disk issues.

The logs for your backup task should also indicate if any disk type errors are being encountered.

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backup using same) then look in the Demon logs.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

that is the build i have, 35860  got on chat twice,   they repaired 2 times  still cant compress

i am trying to back up c: system drive    i have 4 1tb ssd in computer i built   i have a folder on f: acronis with months

i back up every friday c: which is system drive  there is no music  2g of pictures not many pdf's  was using acronis 2015 it worked just fine   93g down to about 48g

hope this helps

William, the logs are really the way to try to understand this issue and see if there are any errors stopping compression from being used.

One further thought, please ensure that in your backup task Options > Advanced > Image creation mode settings that you have not selected to use 'Sector-by-sector' mode.

If that is not enabled, then compression should work if this is set in the Options > Advanced > Performance settings, where the default compression is 'Normal'.
Note: Compression cannot be changed once a backup task has been run to create a backup archive file - it can only be changed for new tasks (before being run).

If you still have problems, then please collect the logs by zipping the Backup worker and Demon folders (to preserve the original log file names) and upload to the forum for this topic using the File > Upload option (shown below the entry text box panel).

have not done sector by sector i understand the settings have tried high and max still the same

dont really know where the logs are , looked at control panel admin tools event viewer some logs there

but i really dont know what i am looking at

again this worked fine last week on acronis 2015

its not life or death,  just dont know why this wont work

William, was this a upgrade directly from ATI 2015 to ATI 2021 and bringing this backup task from the old version too?

The logs are all fairly obscure hence why you would need to use the MVP Assistant stand-alone application to be able to access these in a more readable format (see my earlier post #1 above with a link to where to download this from).

yes to the upgrade, dont know about bringing backup task from old version

the chat people were on my computer twice they couldnt figure it out

thought someone here might know more  will try to get the mvp assistant

as always i appreciate the help

pat

Pat, if you are continuing an old ATI 2015 backup task on ATI 2021 then this could be at the heart of this issue.

The ATI 2021 User Guide states the following:

Upgrading from old versions of Acronis True Image

If your current version of Acronis True Image is Acronis True Image 2019 or Acronis True Image 2020, the new version will simply update it; there is no need to remove the old version and reinstall the software. If your current version is older, we recommend that you remove the current version, first.

Please keep in mind that the backups created by the later program version may be incompatible with the previous program versions. Therefore, if you roll back Acronis True Image to an older version, you likely will have to re-create the backups using the older version. We strongly recommend that you create new bootable media after each product upgrade.

Perhaps the easiest method of testing whether this issue is directly related to the old backup task would be to create a new backup task using the same source data, then check to see if you see a compressed backup archive when it has run?

i have 3 old tib files in there own separate folder

there are 7 demon logs

there are 10 backup worker logs

yesterday i deleted all the tibx files except one using the acronis program

hope this helps

Pat, can you zip up all the Backup Worker and Demon log files (or zip the folders containing them) and upload here, then I can look at the logs for you?

just tried to make backup on 1tb external ssd in usb enclosure

it did the same thing no compression

Pat, the logs do not show any error indications at all which raises some further questions here?

What is shown in the Activity page for this backup task?  Can you share a screen image of that Activity page please.

Can you share a screen image of the main Backup page too to show the statistics shown there for the Source and Destination panels etc.

What is the size of the I:\ACRONIS 2021\\PAT-MAIN 1230 TEST.tibx file as shown in Explorer?

The log is showing the following sizes for this backup task:

12/31/2020 16:02:14 Backup Statistics:
Pictures Number: 44872 Size: 12277538214 Bytes Size: 11.434 GB
Video Number: 287 Size: 1120672891 Bytes Size: 1.044 GB
Music Number: 3639 Size: 47926218890 Bytes Size: 44.635 GB
Documents Number: 14878 Size: 6238181318 Bytes Size: 5.81 GB
System Number: 168678 Size: 49226627287 Bytes Size: 45.846 GB
Others Number: 76321 Size: 55149861522 Bytes Size: 51.362 GB
Total Number: 308675 Size: 171939100122 Bytes Size: 160.131 GB

The above is quite different to your initial post about 93GB of data being compressed?

Download a copy of 7-Zip (free) for zipping up log files / folders.  There are options for either a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the program (Download 7-Zip 19.00 (2019-02-21) for Windows:).  This is what I have been using myself for more years than I can remember!

Regarding using TeamViewer, what country are you located in?  I am in the UK.  Please do not share any TeamViewer access information (ID and Password) publicly in these forums as it would put your PC at risk!  Let's see what your screen shots etc tell us before considering using this tool?

ok, will try to do 7zip-64

this is what i dont understand: i noticed on backup screen that it was backing up 160g

i dont know where it is getting this

i did a properties on C:   89.429g

pictures 789meg    my docs 2.74g   video 84k   i have no music on C

i have music on one of the other ssd's but none on c and that is what i want to back up

if it compressed 160 to 94 that would be ok but i dont know where with 71 extra gigs of info

i would not let anyone on my machine just so you know,  im in missouri suburb of kansas city

i dl 7zip-64  but i dont know where these log files are in win 7 to select them for zipping

will try to figure it out

again thanks for the help

WOW  i just figured it out

on backup screen  source   it had entire pc

i just wanted disk c:

when i changed that my file on f:  is now 37.7g

sorry for being dumb and wasting your time

thanks again

Pat, glad that you have figured this issue out.  The default source for all new backup tasks now defaults to 'Entire PC' as you have discovered, which may be fine if there is only one disk installed but not so good otherwise.

dont know why i didnt see it

i have 4   1tb   ssd's     c d e f

put acronis backups on f

also  using normal    the file is only 37g    smaller than 2015 at 48g  fyi

again thanks   pat

will still try to figure out zip program!

later

i would like to make one more stmt.  i didnt figure this out on my own,  thanks to Steve Smith looking at a log file and determining music was involved and i knew none was on c:  i did a properties on all 4 ssd's in my machine which totaled almost what acronis backed up.  that is when i realized there was a source and target and my source was the whole machine not just c:so everything is just fine now and actually acronis was compressing the whole machine just fine

thanks again for having this forum, if not, i dont know when i would have figured this out

happy new year and happy backups

later pat

Pat, thanks for your update / statement - we all have to start somewhere and all need help along the way!  When we stop learning something new, then life is over!

Happy New Year to everyone!
