Acronis has terrible developpers

Thread needs solution

With the latest Acronis 2021 update, on none of my three computers, the old backup versions are deleted although the option is selected. To add insult to injury, I do not get any warning of the failed backup, meaning that if I do not check manually after the automatic backups, I could end up with weeks of failed backups.

Now, is seems that almost any software is detected as a false positive, including the most famous trading platform MT4 / MT5. What will happen next ? Acronis anti-ransom will detect Windows 10 at startup as a ransomware ?

With all these cases of clear development failures, shall I consider that it is time to move to a more serious backup solution ?

Gab, welcome to these public User Forums.

What do you mean where you say that none of your backups are being deleted and you get no warning for a failed backup?

Did you upgrade to ATI 2021 from a previous version, if so, which version?

Have you created new backup tasks on ATI 2021 or are you carrying forward tasks that were created on a previous version?

Have you set up the Notification options for your backup task so that you can an email showing the task status when it runs?

If you are happy with your existing security applications, then use the option in the Protection page of the ATI 2021 GUI to 'Turn off protection permanently' to see if this helps?
Note: even with protection turned off permanently, all the new background Services will continue to run though should take minimal system resources!

Please submit Feedback directly to Acronis (use the tool provided in the GUI Help section) and complain about the imposition of these new protection features plus ask for your vote to be added to the Acronis internal change request: TI-213392 Allow installation without Antimalware components

Hello Steve,

By none of the old backups get deleted, I mean that I end up with failed backups because there is not enough place in the Acronis secure zone. I have chosen the Incremental backup option, but once the Acronis secure zone is full, backups fail.

The weekly backup starts automatically, but in case of failure, I do not get any notification. When the backup starts, I only see in the task bar that Acronis started to back up my system. When it fails, usually because there is not enough place, if I don't check whether the backup was successful or not, I have no idea that the backup failed cause, there is no message, no popup notification, nothing.

I consider that this should be a priority. To let me know when the backup fails should prevail over the potential threat of a malware. Again, I bought a backup system, not a security one. I get notification about threat of potential malware but not about failed backup process.

I updated Acronis 2021 from the 2020 version. I do not remember whether I fully uninstalled the 2020 version or not. I updated then the 2021 version each time a new one was available.

No, I didn’t set any email notification. If I do, will I get informed that the backup could not be performed to the end?

I will certainly now disable the anti-malware option. It is way too aggressive and I get false positives that should never happen with such well known software as MT4 / MT5

Gab, thanks for the further information.

First, upgrading from ATI 2020 to 2021 is fine and should not cause any issues.  It is only recommended to uninstall first if upgrading from a much older version!

Acronis Secure Zone (ASZ) is something that I have not used in many years due to its limitations! It is essentially a modified FAT32 partition that imposes a max 4GB file size meaning that all larger backups have to be segmented, plus if you ever need to recover from the raw file contents of the ASZ, the names used bear no relationship to the backup task that created them!

ASZ also does not use the new .TIBX format files.

When you backup to the ASZ or any other destination (other than the Acronis Cloud), you need to enable the 'Automatic cleanup' option for your backup task(s) and select one of the retention schemes to define how automatic cleanup will be applied.

If you do not enable automatic cleanup, then the situation you have described will occur, the destination will fill and further backups prevented due to lack of available space!

Above is an example of using automatic cleanup that I have for a test backup to the ASZ and which is the easiest method to understand.

The backup task will create a Full backup followed by 5 Incremental backups where the automatic cleanup rule to "Store no more than 1 recent version chains" means that when the next new Full backup has been created successfully, ATI will delete the older backup chain (of 1 x Full plus 5 x Incr files), to leave space for this next backup chain to be expanded etc.

Cleanup is only ever done after a new Full backup has been created, so as to not leave the user with no backups to recover from.

The email Notification option for the backup task will alert you to the task status each time it is run, so if was successful, or has failed etc along with an extract from the log for the task.
