Acronis True Image and Dell XPS 15 9500

Thread solved

I have a new Dell XPS 15 9500 whose system SSD I am trying to backup. The machine has two SSDs, one for Windows 10 2004 and one for Data.

I am using ATI 2017

  • the Linux version boots to an error message regarding the video adapter
  • the WinPE version boots fully, but it does not show any drives on the Dell XPS 15 9500

I could well imagine that this is because Dell SSD drivers are not included in ATI 2017.

How can I solve this issue?

  • create a current WinPE based on Windows 10 2004 and put ATI 2017 on that?
  • upgrade to ATI 2021

I am happy to do an upgrade to ATI 2021, but I want to be sure this really solves the issue

Thanks for any help

What are the actual type of SSD's in your Dell XPS PC ?

Are these NVMe (PCIe) drives?

What SATA controller mode do they use?  Are they using RAID mode?

I would suggest installing the Windows 10 ADK & PE kit files then using the MVP Custom PE Builder script to create media, taking the option to inject Customer drivers, which include those for Intel RST needed for NVMe and RAID.
See forum topic: Important change for Advanced Acronis Media Builder starting with Windows 10 1809

If your SSD's are newer Optane drives, then you will need to download and use the latest Intel RST drivers with the MVP tool.

See forum topic: Failed to Format "D:"; DiskPart errorlevel -2147212243 for another user with a Dell XPS PC and problems getting rescue media to see his internal drives.

Thanks Steve

The two SSDs and the controller in question are (as listed in device manager)

  • Micron 2200S NVMe 512GB
  • Adata SX8200PNP
  • Intel Chipset SATA/PCIe RST Premium Controller

As I don't want to go through the hassle of installing ADK for WinPE, I have upgraded my ATI 2017 to ATI 2021. Trying to build a WinRE rescue media ISO now. It throws me the following error message:

WinRE seems to be ok:

First suggestion is to ensure that you have rebooted your Dell XPS before giving the rescue media builder another go!

After that, then it would be my next suggestion to uninstall ATI and do a fresh clean install so that you are not installing over the top of the older ATI 2017.

The ATI 2021 User Guide > Introduction > Upgrading from old versions of Acronis True Image states as below:

If your current version of Acronis True Image is Acronis True Image 2019 or Acronis True Image 2020, the new version will simply update it; there is no need to remove the old version and reinstall the software. If your current version is older, we recommend that you remove the current version, first.

Thanks Steve

That did the job. Machine booted from WinRE ISO, Backup now running

You're da man!
