Acronis True Image: Event ID 17

Thread needs solution

Since installing ATI 2021 I get the following message in Windows Event Viewer:

Das Sicherheitscenter konnte den Aufrufer nicht überprüfen. Der Fehler DC040780 ist aufgetreten.

(The Security Center was unable to verify the caller. Error DC040780 occurred.)

Problem on two machines: Laptop with upgrade, PC with new install fo ATI).

Event 17 errors are hardware related.  Either memory, PCI Express root port, or Processor core.  You can look at the Component field in the Event Viewer to determine which applies to you.

  • If memory, check ram temp. Bad ram will run hot and indicate faulty modules.  If you are overclocking reduce or eliminate the overclocking
  • If PCI Express root port look in Device Manager for problem components such as add in cards and network adapters. Update drivers for these devices.  Some Realtek net work adapters actually need a driver rollback to function correctly and eliminate the errors
  • If Processor core update chipset drivers.  If overclocking, reduce/remove it.

Okay, so Windows Security Center is producing this error.  I have looked at my install and find two of these errors for today.

I tried an experiment.  I turned off my third party security app antivirus which then enabled Windows Defender.  This caused another Event 17 error.  I then ran a Quick scan with Defender. After that scan completed I restarted my third party application.  So far no Event 17 errors have been logged.

I will monitor Event viewer for these error 17 entries and report back my findings later tonight.

I found a report that links this Error 17 event with Security Center not being able to update the Defender definitions.  My thought is that enabling Defender and running a Quick scan should trigger a definition update.  In doing so this might eliminate the errors.  We shall see.

Reporting back on this issue.  I have found that any change made in security protection of any third party application including scans and definition updates will cause these Event 17 error entries.  At this point I am convinced they are an issue with Windows logging, are benign, and can be ignored.  I will simply delete them from the viewer from time to time to clean it up.

Can confirm it. Acronis 2021 causes ID 17 errors in eventlog. For me only after startup. Went back to 2020.

Btw.: For me ATI is an is an wonderful backup tool. I dont need such new features as AV. Many have W10 Defender. I have Eset. Please Acronis, keep it simple.

Please use the in-App feedback tool (click on helps, then select Send feedback) to make you views known to Acronis. Unfortunately posting on the user forums seems to have little if any impact. The more users who make their views known to Acronis the more likely there is to be a meaningful response.

Thankyou for sending feedback outlining your concerns,

Same problem here with Acronis causing event id 17 "Security Center failed to validate caller with error DC040780."
I did get rid of the event by enabling Active Protection waited 5 min and the event still showed up in the event viewer.
Then I turned off Active Protection again and after that no more event id 17 ;-)

I too have been getting this same event id 17 error every 5 minutes since upgrading to ATI 2021 in mid-October.

I have just switched off ATI protection and hey presto no more errors.

Although this error does not seem to affect the performance of my Win 10 PC, I do not like the idea of an error being generated every 5 minutes.  My other security apps are Kaspersky Total Security and Malwarebytes Premium which are running fine together with no errors. For now I will keep the ATI protection turned off.

Just verified the same issue and cure on 2 other PCs

I am with Bjorn above; Acronis is a backup application - keep it simple and do not start dabbling in the security arena
