ATI 2021:Can't stop Active Protection Service

Thread needs solution

Trying to resolve issue with a Windows update that continually fails to install...annoying.

With a command prompt workaround...

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc

when I get to "net stop cryptSvc"

asks if I want to stop Acronis Active protection service (which I have stopped permanently through ATI )

I type Y for yes...

The requested pause, continue, or stop is not valid for this service

ATI 2021 is showing Active Protection stopped.

Show me the way to stop Active Protection service

David, welcome to these public User Forums.

The only method of actually stopping the AAP service is to first set the start setting for the service to 'Disabled' in the main Services control panel, then restarting Windows.

This will stop the service provided that you don't launch the main ATI GUI application.

To stop the service from being able to be restarted, you would also need to rename the executable behind the AAP service

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\ActiveProtection\anti_ransomware_service.exe"

I would recommend renaming this to anti_ransomware_service.~exe

Note: You may also need to disable the Acronis Cyber Protection service if not allowed to rename the above AAP exe file!  Any new updates for ATI 2021 will bring this all back again!

"C:\Program Files\Acronis\CyberProtect\cyber-protect-service.exe"

The above should not have any impact on Windows Update and hasn't done so on any of my own PC's.

My C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis folder contains only Home & Drivers subfolders.  Where else might I find anti_ransomeware_service.exe to rename it.  I do have File Explorer set to show hidden files and folders.

After I used a third-party app to search for the file the missing folders appeared.  I was not able to rename it even as administrator; it said SYSTEM would not permit it.

Cecil, welcome to these public User Forums.

You will not be able to rename the executable without first stopping the service, which in turn means you need to set the start option for the service to be Disabled then restart Windows (and don't launch the ATI GUI, plus have 'Turned off protection permanently' in the Protection panel first).

Cecil, glad that the information was helpful here!

Please submit Feedback directly to Acronis (use the tool provided in the GUI Help section) and complain about the imposition of these new protection features plus ask for your vote to be added to the Acronis internal change request: TI-213392 Allow installation without Antimalware components
