Backups failed with error "The shadow copy provider had an error"

Thread needs solution

ATI 2021 was preventing sleep so per instructions by Acronis support I reinstalled ATI 2021. That fixed the sleep problem. I added the previous backups to ATI.

The first couple nights the daily backup went OK. Unfortunately, on Monday morning I found a problem with the previous nights weekly backups. They both had failed with the error "The shadow copy provider had an error". I tried the backups manually but they both failed again.

I checked the settings and realized that when I set up ATI again I forgot to disable Active Protection. I then set Active Protection to "Protection is stopped permanently". Once I did that both backups completed OK.

I never trusted Active Protection so I now see why. Does anyone know why having Active Protection enabled caused the backups to fail?

Edward, yours is the first topic that I have seen that has ever made a connection between Active Protection and any Microsoft VSS shadow copy issues.

When ATI 2021 was reinstalled, was this done using an Administrator level account as required?

Have you tried using the Acronis VSS Doctor tool to check that all VSS components are running correctly?  See link in my signature.

Quite strange actually.  Active protection should not have any issue with snapshots.

Edward, were there any system restarts or other major activity between turning off protection and successfully running the backups?

I really don't remember if I rebooted after disabling Active Protection. However, while Active Protection was enabled I rebooted several times without any change when ATI backup was failing. My computer backups have been working again. I have no plans to reenable Active Protection so I am not going to worry about that problem anymore.
