Blowout in time taken for incremental backups

Thread needs solution

I have a backup to a HDD attached to SATA port on motherboard that started behaving strangely. An incremental backup was run on 23 August and took 4.7 hours, at speed of 7.5Mbps and took four hours and seven minutes, and backed up 13.7g Gb of data. This daily backup task has been unable run to completion since. Each time it has claimed that it will take more than a day to complete, so there is something seriously wrong. Could be something to do with Acronis doing a virus scan of the target drive - but I stopped the scan and it made no difference.

This PC seems to be prone to long backup times since installing ATI 2021 (saved settings, uninstalled Beta 2, installed release version, retrieved settings).

Extremely perplexed by this. I have reported the issue via in app feedback.

Got an email of a type I have not seen before:

and then clicked on the web consul but not really add much other than identifying the pc:

the clicked on overview tab which has been redesigned to provide a a better insight

Not sure what it all means, other than the task has failed multiple times for unknown reasons.

Now need to investigate why the backup was cancelled - I did not do it and according to the ATI app it is still running. The backup file has been modified or at least accessed after the email being received.

Have sent further feedback.

This is incredibly weird, the backup is still going on albeit incredibly slowly.

Will post updates.

Include in the feedback was a link to this forum thread.

Ian, have you checked the ti_demon and backup_worker logs for the backup task to see if there are any errors being reported for bad sectors etc?

So far with ATI 2021 all the issues I am seeing have been with the new Protection features rather than with my backup tasks (other than 2021 preventing my laptops from going back to sleep after backups have finished - which looking at the logs are down to Active Protection staying active!).

Steve, have not got around to checking the log files. However the backup finished and several other backup s completed during my dinner break. On the iPad at the moment will check tomorrow morning as it is getting late in Melbourne (+10).

Looks like the error in the email related to the non-completion of the backup yesterday. It seems to be a new daily report. It looks like you have to activate it on each PC. Maybe time to read the User Guide.

Ian,

I got the same type of email reports yesterday showing failures on 2 backups.  Reason was the machine where the backups should have run was not in service yesterday.  So this appears to be how a failed task is not being reported.  Your screenshot of the Dashboard looks like that of Cyber Cloud Backup so it would appear that there is some integration between the two products happening.

I've been trying to back up the system since Sunday! About 300 GB and is still at 8% !! Something that at ATI 2020 did in 2 hours!

I think the problem is caused by the Acronis virus scanning of the *.tibx and *.tib files, particularly the one is the chain being written to. Since disabling all of the Acronis protection things are back to normal. On another machine there is currently a Acronis tech from Russia doing a team viewer session and he notice the incredibly large log file for the scans and I notice that they take a long time.

Today the backup that was causing the problem completed in usual time-frame.

This did not happen in the Beta, I assume that it excluded from the scans the *.tibx and *.tib files, as well as *.ost and *.ost.

Will report progress (only 45 minutes).

Update on the TeamViewer session; they started the backup and it was going very slowly - the backup drive activity was maxing out. Asked if there were any scans going, said no - Norton 360 had never caused issues and I had completely disabled protection. I then checked on the protection tab and file scan was underway! It appeared to be close to completion.

The scanning is clearly the culprit.

You can see all of the incremental backup were very slow; the most recent one (started during the TeamViewer session) was more like the speeds I would expect.

Will update when I know more.

Something is wrong with my backup. At ATI 2020, incremental backups took about 2 hours.
Now it's still at 14% !!! It's been two days !! Impossible!
What could be happening?

Claudio, if you haven't already opened a support case with Acronis Support, I would strongly recommend that you do so, so that Acronis understand the scope of these issues and the frustration being expressed by users!

I tried to do a manual cleanup of this task - running short of space on the target drive. Went off to let it run, when I came back the PC was completely frozen - no response to the mouse or keyboard. Had to a hard power down. Not sure if the cleanup worked but have made feedback on the problem.

Update: The cleanup seems to have been successful, extra 200+ GB free space on target drive.

Ian

Absurd! About 300 GB and so far only 16%. I started this backup yesterday at 25h08 to 7h.

It never took so long. Something is very wrong. There are still 5 days to go !!!

Further to post #8, below is the screenshot taken during the TeamViewer session yesterday. Looks like it was taken just before the scan completed, which may explain the significantly increased speed in the later part of the backup.

Ian

Despite two restarts the unwanted scan is continuing. I suspect the only way to kill it will be a fresh installation. I will see if pressing stop fixes the problem. Have sent further feedback.

Ian, I have turned off ALL Protection features in ATI 2021 in the GUI as I would rather have the base Backup features without ransomware protection than have the real mess that the Protection features have brought with them!

There are simply too many critical issues in 2021 at this time that should have all been fixed before release!
