Can't clone from small drive to much larger drive

Thread solved

I'm trying to clone a 500GB SSD to a 8TB Hard drive.  With the goal being an 8TB drive with the first 500GB being that of the SSD and the remainder just extra storage space of the now much larger drive.   I have tried manual and automatic and each time the biggest the resulting drive will be is 2TB.   6TB is wasted.

I tried creating two partitions in advance, one 500GB, the other 7.5TB.     True Image ignores these again tries to create a 2TB clone.

The cluster sizes are the same between SSD and hard drive.

I suspect the answer is simply I can't do it, but baffled as to why

The problem is that the 400 GB SSD uses MBR, and the max size of MBR partitions is 2TB, hence the result you are getting. It is possible to convert the MRB disk to GPT - see Microsoft guidance. Note the advice about backing up first.

You probably will be better off truing a disk management untility rather than ATI - checkout Minitool Partition Wizarrd Free, which may allow you to copy the partition to disk using GPT rather than MBR.

Update: Just checked and the latest version of Minitool can convert disks from MBR to GPT - I converted a drive without difficulty. However, keep the original drive as a backup until you varify the conversion worked correctly.

One thing I forgot Bruce; after the conversion you will need to then change the partition size to make use off the full capacity of the disk. Another seniors moment
