Can’t create local backups

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I need help please for the  urgent matter- for several weeks now I cannot make image backups to local drives anymore. This has worked fine for a long time, but in the past few week no longer works. The errors point to disk errors, and suggest file checking.

- it’s not the destination drive, as I have tried 3 different drives (my NAS as well as 2 different external USB drives). All have passed their CHKDSK runs without errors.
- same with source drives of the laptop being imaged; no CHKDSK errors. All partitions checked based on their logical drive letters.
- in fact, the image when backed up to the Acronis cloud works just fine. That’s what makes the inability to back up locally confusing and frustrating.
- I tried IDrive (I don’;t like it...)- and it created a successful backup image to one of the drives that Acronis fails.

Any help you can give is appreciated. Thanks! Win10 BTW, Acronis protection is OFF. ESET is in use, but that is controlled by corporate IT so can’t pause it- but it has been used for years without issues.

Steven, please confirm that you are using ATI 2021 with the latest update build #34340 installed?

To isolate your backup failure issue, please try making a separate backup of each individual partition from your source drive, including those which are normally hidden!

There have been several other recent reports of issues being caused by a small OEM type partition causing a backup to fail when it was included.

See forum topic: Error 'Unknown Status' failure after 2021 Upgrade - where this was identified to an OEM SONYSYS partition, but there have been other reports for a DELL OEM partition.

If this is proven to be the case for you too, then please open a Support Case with Acronis so that the developers can investigate why this is happening when all was fine with previous versions of ATI such as 2020 for most users!

Thanks Steve!

Yes, ATI 2021, build 34340 is confirmed

.
I will try a separate partition backup this weekend.

I did suspect what you mention, as it is a Dell with a hidden partition and drive letter (Z: and "ESP"). But iDrive seemed to have no issues with it. And Acronis hasn't had an issue with this laptop for a couple of years....
I will write back when I have results for the individual partition.

Keep in mind that these are company laptops, so I have limited permissions to do partition investigation resize work or other tools research; I am a remote employee many many states away from Corporate IT. Hence why I have used Acronis- no time to send a laptop to IT for reimage, reinstallation of critical stuff, etc. It saved my bacon on a prior laptop once... restore of image was magic!

Any idea why cloud image backups work? I would think that if it was a Dell partition the same error would occur?

Thanks again,

Steve V.

Steve, difficult to say why this issue with these OEM partitions doesn't impact Cloud backups other than that they use a slightly different backup scheme than used for local backups!
