Cloud backups after changing disk drive

Thread needs solution

I have been backing up 4 volumes of Win 10 user data for several years from a Samsung drive. I have just rebuilt my desktop computer which has caused the source volumes to move to a new drive. My backup can no longer find the data on the original drive -it's no longer present - and so I have to configure it to back up from the volumes in their new location. No problem - except that they are are now seen as distinctly different from the volumes in the cloud backup and I am faced with about 24 hours duration to backup all the data on these volumes.
Anyone know of a way to avoid this and preserve the continuity of the backup through the drive change? In effect I want to tell Acronis that the these drives are the same as the ones it has already backed up. There is virtually no change to the data content since the previous backup.

Alan, welcome to these public User Forums.

What type of backup are you using here to the Acronis Cloud?

If you are creating a Disks & Partitions backup, then this would explain why the backup task sees the new volumes as being changed data because this type of backup uses a combination of the unique partition identifiers along with data at a sector level.

By changing your disk drive both the partition identifiers and sector usage have all changed too.

For backups of any Windows OS disk drives / partitions, then using Disks & Partitions backups are essential if you ever need to recover the drive.

Otherwise, for data drives, you can use Files & Folders backups which are less subject to this type of change.

Note: the same effect can be seen when disk drives are defragmented due to data being moved between different disk sectors as it is consolidated on the drive.

Yes - I am using Disks & Partition backup in this case. The decision to use that kind of backup for these volumes dates back so far that the rationale is now lost somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory...
Thanks for the clear explanation, Steve. It looks like I might as well start a new back for this content and use a Files & Folders style backup this time.
