Cyber Protection Service

Thread needs solution

This has caused me major issues - resulting in some of my applications no longer functioning correctly. Also it seems that 2021, or at least the last update, has greatly slowed down response times on my computer.

I have uninstalled 2021 and re-installed 2019.

My computer now functions normally and the response time is now as it used to be.

I have raised the issue with support but there has been no response from them at this time.

Allan,

Please submit Feedback directly to Acronis (use the tool provided in the GUI Help section) and complain about the imposition of these new protection features plus ask for your vote to be added to the Acronis internal change request: TI-213392 Allow installation without Antimalware components

I, too, have suddenly been hit by the Cyber Protection Service running my drives non-stop for over 24 hours now - it's seriously affecting my productivity.  At first I thought it might just need to scan - so I left it going - but it's been running for over a day now, and sucking some significant resources.

It's incredibly annoying to PAY for software that runs worse than a previous version.  I'm going to probably downgrade to 2020 until this ridiculousness is fixed … so essentially I'm paying for software I can't use.

Joe, welcome to these public User Forums.

Have you been able to use the option in the Protection page to 'Turn off protection permanently' and did this make any difference here?

The other setting to check before doing the above, click on the Protection Settings button (lower right corner) and open the Vulnerability scan page, turn this off on that page. Save the settings then check again whether the setting was honoured or not?
I have an open Support Case (#4577504) with Acronis where I cannot turn off the Vulnerability scan or the protection settings permanently!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply.  So, I did some experimenting with your suggestions.  When I tried adjusting (on/off) any of the "sub-settings" (not choosing the nuclear option of "Turn off protection") - including the Vulnerability scan, the HDD thrashing continued on it's merry way regardless of the settings.  However, when I chose "Turn off protection" and then set it to turn back on after Restart, the drive thrashing stopped immediately.  Upon Restart, the scanning (thrashing) did NOT resume, whereas before it was starting immediately every time I rebooted (even when I disabled the Cyber Protection Service in the Services CP).

I'm wondering if the software was stuck in some kind of loop.

When you try to turn off protection permanently, what is happening?  Is it starting up again when you reboot?

Joe, my issue is only impacting on one old Dell laptop with the perpetual (Standard) version of ATI 2021, and whenever I try to turn off the Vulnerability scan, it just turns itself back on again, and trying to turn off protection permanently gives an error saying 'Not all protection could be stopped' (or similar).

Glad that your disk thrashing has stopped for you!  My personal opinion is that the new Protection features have never been truly 'fit for purpose' and were rushed out by Acronis due to Marketing pressure, completely ignoring all the negative feedback from users who participated in the Beta testing program for ATI 2021.

Steve,

Have you tried shutting off all of the Acronis services manually? Especially the "minder" services that probably keep malware from shutting down those services (and turns them back on when they've been shut down)?  That worked for me temporarily, but the minders came right back and re-enabled everything upon Restart.

I agree with your assessment of the new malware/antivirus features being not ready for prime time.  I run Malwarebytes for malware, so, if anything, I'd like to keep the Anti-Ransom-Ware features of ATI, but the other bits I can do without.

I can only imagine how unstable ATI was in Beta - the first release - which I upgraded to - caused huge instability issues on my main system (freezes, BSOD's, boot lockups, etc) and it took me over an hour to pry it out and downgrade to an older version.

I guess we'll see if they address this ... :-/

Joe, my support case has been open since last August when I had the exact opposite issue in that I could not enable the new Protection features as these turned themselves off again immediately.  This was fixed by a later build but then this new issue arose and rather than giving me a new support ticket number, they have continued the same one for this new issue!

The affected Dell laptop is purely used for testing purposes along being used as a TV box in our kitchen, so is turned off for the majority of time.

On my main laptop, I have all the new Protection features, including the background services and processes fully disabled (such that I do not even see a Protection tab in the ATI GUI), this with no obvious downside other than having to repeat the disabling steps whenever a new build is released and resets all the changes back again!
