Entire PC Backup failed with "A fatal error occurred while reading the snapshot".

Thread needs solution

I have just cloned the old HDD (C drive Win 10 OS) to a new SSD.

Removed the HDD and replaced it with the SSD.

Booting up and overall performance much faster as expected.

I ran the existing Entire PC backup task which after some time failed with "A fatal error occurred while reading the snapshot".

Could this simply be due to it being a different physical drive?

Should I have created a new Entire PC backup task for the new SSD?

Thanks

B R, you should definitely reselect the Source drive & partitions for the backup task as the unique identifiers for these may well have changed with swapping from the HDD to a SSD.

If that doesn't resolve the snapshot error, then I would suggest deleting all existing shadow copy storages to ensure that no 'stale' data is being accessed by the backup task.

You can use the vssadmin tool run as Administrator to do this, but be aware that this will also delete all restore point data too.  The command is shown below:

vssadmin delete shadows /all

As Information, vss uses 3 components to perform its function.  Often times a simple reboot (restart) of the machine will fix issues with components not registering correctly after a clone operation.

The VSS Doctor tool will fix these types of errors in most cases.
