Error message: No current partition

Thread solved

Last week, I allowed Windows 2004 to install itself on my machine. Not long after that. Acronis 2021 wanted to update itself to Build 34340.

I ran my usual backups last night. The data backup (D:, file by file) went as usual; the system image backup (C:) failed with a "no current partition" error message.

I can see nothing wrong with the options set for that backup; it has worked quite successfully for some time. It includes the C: partition, and the two hidden partitions characteristic of a Windows installation.

The Knowledge Base seems to say that the error message I got often indicates insufficient room on the destination drive, so I checked that carefully. The destination drive is a 4TB external hard drive, with 561GB space remaining. My C: drive currently has 126GB of stuff on it. The last full backup took 52GB. So it would seem that there is ample space remaining on my destination drive.

What other problems result in a "no current partition" error message in a disk backup?

Rob, installing any new Windows update can cause the partition identifiers (GUID) to be changed due to a new Recovery partition being created.

Please try reselecting the Source for your backup task where you are seeing the error message about 'No current partition'.

Thank you for your comment.

In trouble-shooting before I posted, I did open the task to make sure it was as it was supposed to be. Finding that the source was properly identified (C: and the two hidden partitions), I cancelled out without making any changes.

Some time later, I restarted the machine and ran the task manually just to see if a restart was needed. Whether or not it was, the task ran to completion with no error messages and a successful validation.

If this is a well-known issue, I apologize for not having found it when I searched the forum. A search on "no current partition" returned more than 13,000 results; I was not prepared to take the time to review all of those. Most of them had no apparent relevance to the search phrase. Perhaps some day Acronis will provide a more responsive search engine for the forum.

Rob, hopefully having had your task run successfully, this issue is now resolved.

As far as searching in the forums, the search feature has not been very useful for a long time though just looking at it again, it looks like it has been updated since I last looked but still doesn't return any useful results!!

The method that I use is to search via Google which is far more effective:

Google: site:forum.acronis.com 'no current partition'  does produce useful results!

Topic: "No current partition" is for an issue caused by insufficient space on the destination drive!

Topic: "No current partition" when backing up - again insufficient space on destination drive.

Topic: No current partition error - deals with reselecting source and destination again.

My mistake. I have a strong preference for going to the horse's mouth (so to speak) when looking for information I'm going to have to rely on. In my naivete, I therefore assumed that the best source would be Acronis, given that the question involves Acronis' software. It seems I was wrong in making that assumption.

However, I really appreciate the straight-up nature of your response. Many companies will go well out of their way to avoid making an admission like that. Chalk one up to Acronis for that, at least.

Rob, using Google to search the Acronis Forums by using site:forum.acronis.com is still giving you results from these same forums but the search tool is 500% better than the one that Acronis provide in the forums themselves.  All the forums are in the public domain so any search engine should be capable of doing the same.

My response here is that of another user!  I, nor the other MVP's work for Acronis or speak officially for them!  Click on the MVP badge under my name for a fuller description of our role.
