help with scheduled and nonstop backup

Thread needs solution

hi, ive recently redid my backups after migrating from a laptop to an actual desktop and need help understanding if this backup setup is sufficient for a restore should i need to restore my whole pc and/or my personal files/library and any issues i might encounter (i don't completely understand the difference between nonstop and scheduled backup and whether nonstop will restore my library as i download my new paystubs  from work to my pc on a weekly basis as well as run our home security cam software on this pc)

  1. i have nonstop backup setup and running in case of a a system disk failure or unwanted changes should i get a really bad virus etc (hopefully not ransomware) on external usb hdd 1
  2. i have a monthly backup that runs on the last thursday of the month setup using the version chain scheme on external usb hdd 2

both hdd's are 1 tb and setup to be encrypted with acronis, is this good enough to protect my pc or am i missing something, also on another note:

how do i possibly setup pre and post commands to run the system file checker before it backs up on the monthly backup cycle?

Dylan, welcome to these public User Forums.

I have never had any need for using Non Stop Backup tasks on any of my PC's are I have nothing that changes as frequently as this would allow for capturing, i.e. approx every 5 minutes.

Scheduled backup tasks are perhaps easier to use and to manage, also you can have as many scheduled backups as you need according to the type of data and frequency of change.

The recommendation for backup strategy is to have at least 3 different backups, going to 2 different locations and with 1 backup stored offline / off-site away from any risk of malware or natural disaster (fire, flood, damage...).

For protection against malware, ransomware etc, then you need to have a reputable security application installed, antivirus, firewall etc, to keep this fully up to date with all new definitions and also keep your PC and other applications protected from known vulnerabilities by installing any new versions as released by the vendors.

ATI 2021 includes the new Acronis Cyber Protection feature in the Advanced & Premium subscription versions but not in the Standard (perpetual) and Essential subscription editions.  If you already have good security software installed, then you definitely do not need to have both these active - doing so would cause other issues with conflicts etc.

I would not recommend running System File Checker automatically via a batch file or pre command as this should not be necessary!  Windows 10 Maintenance tasks should give an indication if additional tools need to be used.

For protection against malware / ransomware etc, then this really is a matter of safe conduct by the user, i.e. don't open unsolicited email attachments, don't click on unknown web links, keep away from suspect web sites etc.  Practise safe 'Hex' is an old but true computer saying!  Most malware gets a foothold by a bad decision or action that overrides the default protection of installed security applications!
