Raid 1 array backup

Thread needs solution

Hi.  I am considering a G-Raid with TB3 external hard drive in raid 1 configuration as a simple set up for a photography workflow offering some speed and redundancy.  Raid 1 in itself doesn't constitute a backup so I would like to back up the G-Raid to additional external drives.  Can I use Acronis True Image to back up a twin disk raid 1 array?  Is it possible to back up one version of the mirrored data on the array or will the entire array with both versions have to be backed up which obviously means having a backup drive twice the size of the individual raid 1 drives.

Alan, welcome to these public User Forums.

ATI will only see any RAID array as a single drive (unless it has been set to show as providing more than one drive letter) when being accessed from within the host OS.

You do not mention here whether you are using Windows or MacOs but the reference to TB3 might suggest the latter?

Caveat: I am a Windows user with no direct experience of using ATI on any Mac.

How the array is presented to the OS is how ATI will perceive it, but you should then still have a choice of whether to create a Disks & Partitions backup of the whole drive etc, or to create a Files & Folders backup where you can be more selective of the source data.  I suspect that doing the latter would be better suited for this scenario where the RAID is essentially a large storage space.

Hi Steve, thanks for the response.  I have a windows 10 computer.  I am new to raid arrays so just trying to figure things out but I think your post has helped clear up my confusion,  the raid array will be presented as a single drive in the OS and Acronis will see it as such and I can select which files/folders I want to back up.  So that's pretty straight forward, not sure why I was trying to over think it :)
