Restore to a new pc

Thread solved

I have taken a backup from the old PC (Windows 10), and want to restore from C:/Users/name to the new pc (Windows 10).  However, it doesn't restore to "This PC" but puts it under OS (C:).  How do I get all of the data that sits under C:/Users/name to appear under "This PC" so that the Documents etc that sit under that user appear under "This PC"?

Sarah,

I presume you are attempting a Files and Folders recovery of your user data.  I believe you would need to select the data at the file level and then target the recovery to the directory level of the new PC.

Sarah, be very careful about restoring everything under the C:\Users\<name> to a different Windows 10 system from which it was taken. There are lot of things under there which should not be copied over. Start with just some folders which are known to be your own personal data.

Ditto to the previous comments plus one more to add.

Make a full disk backup of the new PC before restoring any data from the old one!  If you bring over any of the hidden / system profile or registry files from the old PC, then there is a good chance that you will 'break' the new one if restoring into the user folders for a user on that PC with the same name!

Recovery options should be set to NOT recover the original user permissions for any data being brought to a different PC.
