[Off Topic] Win 10 question, will Anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-anything bad, still be required in Win 10 or would Win Defen

Thread needs solution

Virus and malware protection will still be necessary in Windows 10, or would Win Defender suffice?

For years, I've been a Mac user, so I've never had to worry about usual Windows security concerns.

Because of this, our IT man handed me an old 2011 Dell with Win7Pro that's ready for a Windows 10 upgrade. With this computer, I'd like to dual boot Win10 and Ubuntu.

There are a few more questions.

When I was a kid, my grandpa bought Norton Anti-Virus for me. A premium version of Malwarebytes was also acquired by him.

Then a few years later, I find myself relying entirely on Windows Defender. Would a premium solution or a mix of solutions function better than Windows Defender in terms of detecting and cleaning up viruses and other malicious software? No, I'm not a newbie when it comes to computers or security, but I've never delved into anti-virus.

Chris, welcome to these public User Forums.

Windows Defender & Firewall on Windows 10 is now a much improved protection solution that how it ever was on Windows 7, and as such is what I use on my own systems, especially when all the recommended features are enabled.

I too am using Windows Defender and Firewall as Steve does. I'd been using AVG and then Avast for years, as well as Zone Alarm firewall. Gave 'em all up a few months ago as they often presented more frustrations.

But most importantly, I use the PC equivalent of wearing a mask and socially distancing. That is, I keep scripting and cookies off by default in my browser, I don't click on links in strange emails, I scan downloaded apps with Defender and Malwarebytes, I periodically scan the whole system, and I keep a healthy level of active paranoia.
