True Image 2021 did not restore my drive properly.

Thread needs solution

I have heard a lot about Acronis True Image and I decided to give it a try. I downloaded the latest version and installed it on my second computer. I took the ssd drive of my first computer (Win 10 x64 pro 20H2 both computers) and plugged it in my second computer. I ran True Image and created a backup of the hole drive. Operation completed successfully. I formatted the drive, deleted the partitions and tried to restore the backup. Operation completed successfully and checked the file on that computer. The files where there. I took the drive and plugged it in my first computer again. The computer cannot boot Windows. After the initial screen from the motherboard, I see the screen in the attached image instead of the Windows 10 logo. Any ideas what went wrong?

Aris, welcome to these public User Forums.

The most likely reason why your restored drive doesn't boot correctly is because your two computers use different BIOS boot modes?

Your screen image shows a title of Windows Boot Manager suggesting that that PC uses UEFI / GPT for the BIOS boot mode, so you should check whether your second computer uses the same mode or whether it is a Legacy / MBR boot system?

You can run the command msinfo32 from within Windows to check the BIOS mode which is shown in the right side panel of the report it produces.

I am assuming that when you created backup of the SSD that you used the Disks & Partitions option and had all partitions from the SSD selected.

How was the drive connected to the PC during the backup and restore - internal SATA or M.2 port, or via USB?

Ian

Both motherboards are quite old. The pc with the target drive (the drive that the backup is mage of) has an MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard and the pc with the destination drive has an MSI NF750-G55 board. Acronis true Image is installed on the second computer and I used internal SATA II port for both the target and destination drive.

About the UEFI/BIOS question, there is no UEFI. The boards are too old, there was no UEFI back then. Also, I used an app, rufus, to write a Windows 10 ISO image to a flash drive and that app by default used UEFI mode. When I tried to install Win 10 to the target drive, a similar screen with the one in my initial post appeared telling me that UEFI mode was used instead of a BIOS/legacy mode. I rewrote the ISO image using BIOS mode and then it was installed correctly. I did some work with it and tried to restore the backup file. Then the problem appeared. I tried to boot in safe mode and then Windows started. It wasn’t easy to boot in safe mode as I didn’t know what to do. Rebooted and now, everything, seems to be ok, but I am not pretty sure about that.
