Universal resatore - can't access media files

Thread needs solution

Hi, I try to move windows 10 to different hardware.

I can't boot the usb stick i have created using Acronis Universal Restore from the Extras menu.

I found this kb Article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/62646 which describes the error in ATI media builder 2020. The solution is to update the efi loader (bootwiz64.efi).

I guess the Universal Restore from ATI 2021 is still based on the old efi loader, so i tried to replace the files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\MediaBuilderPluginFilesUR but I can't get access to this folder or the files in it. I tried it as User SYSTEM, Trusted Installer, took Ownership and so on - nothing helped. I stopped Active Protection but the service is still running and i can't stop it - my guess is that this will prevent to replace the efi-files.

Can someone direct me to how i can disable this service or knows if something different prevents me from updating the efi-files

The System is a fresh installed Windows 10 on a NUC 11 Core i5

Thanks
Holger

Holger, welcome to these public User Forums.

For a Windows 10 migration you may not need to use the Acronis Universal Restore tool at all as the OS is much better at handling new hardware when encountered.

Try just making a full disk backup of the existing OS system then restore that using the normal Acronis 'Simple' Rescue Media to the disk in the new NUC system.

The key point to observe is that the correct BIOS boot mode is used for the restore to match how the OS is booted and the type of drive being restored to, i.e. most modern systems now use UEFI boot with GPT partitions, and this is the norm for new NVMe M.2 type drives.

If your old OS system uses Legacy BIOS boot, then booting the Acronis Rescue Media on the NUC in UEFI boot mode will do the migration from MBR to GPT / Legacy to UEFI for you too.
