WARNING: Latest Windows update can hose a system when running chkdsk /f

Thread solved

Many users have reported problems running chkdsk /f after the December 8th update. It can be fixed, but can be heart stopping first.

MS is getting a fix out.

Be careful out there!

Windows 10 2004/20H2: Microsoft fixes chkdsk issue in update KB4592438

It worked, the bug I reported about chkdsk leading to an unbootable system on some systems has been fixed. At least that's what the descriptions of update KB4592438 say. Here is some information - also what Microsoft does not reveal.

Microsoft fixes the problem
Microsoft has now published an addendum in the support article for update KBkb4592438, which describes exactly this error. There, Microsoft writes that on a smaller number of systems that have this update installed, running chkdsk /f can corrupt the file system and the device may no longer boot.

Microsoft states that this issue is fixed and should be prevented automatically on non-managed (via WSUS, SCCM, etc.) devices. However, it may take up to 24 hours for the fix to be applied to unmanaged devices. Microsoft states that the fix may be applied to the device faster if users restart Windows 10.
