WinPE bootable USB drive boots with UI scaled incorrectly due High-DPI scaling incompatibility

Thread needs solution

Below is a link to a YouTube video that illustrates the problem I am seeing on my Razer Blade 15 Advanced laptop with a 4K UHD (3,840 x, 2,160) display.  You will need to add the Youtube URL part to the link below in order to get this link to work since this forum will not allow posts with links in them to save.

Below is a comment posted on that video by Acronis:

"We’re planning to address HiDPI scaling issue in one of the updates for upcoming Acronis True Image 2021. In the meantime, after maximizing the screen,  it is possible to use side tabs for navigating to the backup or recovery section and proceed with needed task”.

So far Acronis has not fixed this issue in True Image 2021.

It appears the High-DPI scaling for 4K UHD (3,840 x, 2,160) displays cannot be easily fixed when booting into WinPE from everything I have read.  I have sent several emails to Acronis tech support, but they don't really seem to understand the problem even though I have given them the same video link you see above.

I am a Mac and Windows programmer, primary Windows 7, but I have done no programming on Windows 10 and have no experience in trying to make an application’s UI scale correctly with these newer 4K UHD displays that are now available.

The reason I just made the previous statement is because my next statement below may be wrong due to my inexperience with programming UI on High-DPI displays.

As far as I can tell this problem cannot be fixed by an individual trying to tweak the boot.wim image and must by fixed by Acronis with changes to the True Image application when running under the WinPE environment.

I made every change I could think of to modify the boot.wim image to fix the problem, but all of my efforts failed to make any difference.  I also tried creating the WinPE bootable USB drive via the Custom WinPE-based Media Builder tool, which produced a WinPE bootable USB disk that had even more problems than just creating the WinPE bootable USB drive from the Acronis True Image 2021 application.

For now I will have to use the Linux bootable USB drive.  When booted from Linux bootable USB drive, the UI issue seen in the YouTube video doesn’t occur.  The one issue I have with the Linux boot, and this is really the reason why I am making this post, is that the touchpad doesn’t work when booted by the Linux bootable USB drive.

Is there any way to fix this issue so that when I use the Linux bootable USB drive the touchpad will work?  I know that I can press cntrl-M to use the cursor keys to move the mouse or I can attach an external mouse, which will work as well, but I wanted to know if something could be done to make the touchpad work?

Todd, further to our discussion offline from the forum via private messages, sorry but the Linux boot media cannot be modified in any way.

Using an external mouse is the recommended option if your touchpad is not recognised.

Steve, thanks for the Linux answer.  I thought that was going to be the case, but wasn't sure.  I may try a couple more things with the MVP Custom PE Builder tool, but as I stated in my post I think this has to be addressed by Acronis with an update to True Image.

Todd, if you have not already done so may I suggest sending feedback from within ATI; include a link to the discussion in this thread as it will provide more context to the problem.

Hello Todd,

thank you for your posting! I've passed the topic to the product team, unfortunately there is no ETA for fixing the issues with resolution on 4k monitors.
