Identify Edition

Thread needs solution

Let's say I have a (set of) .tib file(s). From the filename I gave it, I can readily determine from what machine it relates to.

But what I need to determine is what edition of Acronis created the .tib file (or set).

In a general search of the forums, I came across a mention that examining the first few dozen or last few dozen bytes does not reveal the edition used to create the .tib file(s).

I did find the hard drive model number of the related machine, and that would help if my naming convention wasn't sufficient.

But since I have repeatedly received errors that "This is not an Acronis {insert edition here} backup," when (attempting to) examine a .tib set, there is obviously a way to make such a determination.

Is there a free-standing utility that will identify what was used to make the .tib backup?

I'd like to bump this question as well- it's really poor software design not to be able to migrate from one version to another, and to make the archives only readable by the software that wrote it (and this is happening in the same company by software under the same name, just a different version). Is Acronis trying to write themselves into a corner? I basically can never upgrade for fear that my archives will be unusable by some other version! Sure, software can have newer and more features, but to change compression formats and algorithms so they are incompatible is very short-sighted.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for posting and welcome to the forum.

Brian, we appreciate your feedback and while we do not have such utility, I have forwarded your comment to our Product Management team through our Customer Listening System.

Matthew, Acronis consumer software will allow you to restore backups created with older versions. For example, you can restore a backup created with Acronis True Image 2012 Home by using True Image 2013 by Acronis. Please check the following guide for additional information.

If there is anything else we can do for you please let me know.

Thank you.
