Operation stopped drive not ready

I have a backup set to run every weekday evening on an XP PC running True image echo workstation. It backs out to a usb hard drive. Quite often in the morning there is an error message saying "Operation stopped drive not ready." If I click retry the backup then completes. The drive seems to be in place and accessable so does anyone have any ideas why this keeps happening?
