2011 Build 6597 two issues
I just upgraded to the 6597 build of 2011 and encountered two issues as I started to clone my laptop HD (Lenovo W700)
1) TI reporting of Disk 1, 2, etc is not in-sync with Win7 computer management. What TI reports as disk 2 is really disk 1. This is a minor issue but annoying.
2) As I attempt to clone the laptop drive, as TI is going through a calculation it encounters a problem, a window pops up in the lower right corner of my screen where TI tells me it has encountered a problem and has failed. The really bad news is that TI does not tell me why it has failed, I cannot find any log with additional info, clicking on the error window does not do anything. Currently I'm using another utility to test the HD for possible defects and hopefully repair them. I'm totally confused as to what issue TI encountered.

Thanks for the Lenovo procedure. Although I had used this procedure during a test with TI (it ran with success) I did not realize that this was "the" procedure. In another test I was able to restore without issue with the main drive in the main bay and the second drive in the second bay (on the W700 there are two bays) thus the W700 may be different or I was just lucky. In a third test I put a fresh drive in the main bay, booting using the CD, recovered from a TI image - this also worked.
I think I discovered the reason for the failure in my initial attempt to clone the drive earlier today. I removed the drive and installed it in a system that I reserve just for testing hard drives. Here is were I have various HD testing tools. I booted in Safe mode and kicked off Hard Disk Sentential and ran a test that will read the data, write back the data and if defective it will attempt to repair (mark the sector bad) and very early in the test it found a bad sector. I "assume" that TI detected the bad sector and realized that it could not clone the drive and gave me the failure. It would be MUCH nicer if TI provided a bit (actually a lot) more information at this time. If I were not watching the screen I would not have see the pop-up because after a few seconds it disappeared.
TI has been running incremental backups of the drive since Sept 2010 when I went through a fresh install thus I "should" have a recovery path using the boot CD for this system.
After HDS completes testing I will again try to clone the drive but this time I will use the boot CD, make note of the SN of each drive and ensure I don't accidentally use the wrong drive as the source. I did this several years ago, it is amazing how quick (like 3 seconds) the empty drive will be cloned to the other drive. Not so amazing is the inability to boot the system and crying like a big baby.

While the HD test was running I checked my Acronis backups and discovered ALL of them had failed. This was SUPER disappointing that Acronis did not make it super obvious that the backups were failing.
I completed HDS test (one issue was found and I assume that a repair was attempted), I then attempted to clone the drive, again it failed. I then decided to run SpinRite level 4 on the hard drive, six more problem areas were discovered and SpinRite was able to do some correction but not 100%. I then ran an Acronis full backup, this ran with success per Acronis. I then attempted to clone the drive but this failed (I assume it is the bad sector issue). When I attempted the clone I used your suggested procedure. I'm now running a full recovery using a newly tested drive (no issues were reported). If the run is successful I will launch a full set of test on the failed drive to see if the bad sector will be resolved. If the test is successful I will then use it and another drive that has already been tested to create clone drives of the now production drive.

My recovery from the TIB on an eSATA to an empty drive worked and I could boot using the drive I recovered to. I then attempted to clone the new drive to a third drive. The clone attempt failed. I looked at the results and I saw the 100MB partition but the other partition was not created. Is there a special clone procedure for the Lenovo Thinkpads?
I have a W700 which has two drive bays. I put the production drive in the front bay and the empty drive in the back bay. I did not try using a USB or eSATA port for one of the drives.

I have no personal experiece with the IBM but what has been reported is that there has been success cloning an IBM to both larger and smaller disks.
If you have not done so, the method I would use would be to (Clone when booted from the TI Rescue CD,)
1. Place the source disk to be cloned inside the eSata.
2. Place the blank target in the same bay that the original boot disk was installed prior when in normal operation. In other words, no matter whether our restore or clone, the target will always be in the same physical location as the orignal disk was during normal operation.
Would you mind doing me a favor, please. Would you consider posting a screen capture of your Think Pad Windows Disk Management graphical view. I am trying to collect as many different brands as possible for reference materials of my guides and postings. Below is my most current compilation. Your view will be added to the collection.
Should your cloning not be successful, if you have other copies of TI such as 2010 or 2009 Rescue CD, I would also try these versions.
If you have some reading time, you might be interested in my guides listed inisde my index (signature below) underf item #3--particularly 3-CC and 3-BB. If you use the automatic mode of cloning, all partitions will be resized. The manual method enables theuser to control partition sizes.

GroverH - attached is the image for my Lenovo W700. I have no idea what Disk 0 is, this is the first time I've noticed it. Disk 1 is my boot drive and Disk 2 is my eSATA. The eSATA is used for my TI and SyncBack backups for this system only.
Thanks for the other link, I'll do a bit of testing later this week.

Thank you for the attachment. That can be very helpful.
Maybe disk 0 is a memory stick in a card reader or flash/thumb drive, etc.

The disk 0 remains an unknown, I don't have a USB stick or Flash card installed. For now I'm not going to worry about it (this may bite me later). The only storage I have installed is my HD and an eSATA drive. I just pulled the laptop out of my dock and the disk 0 is still there. Oh well,..... later.....

Hi All
My guess is Disk 0 is the recovery partition that Lenovo put on the Laptop...It usually is not named and is FAT 32
